"You need to just go, that was it; survive, win." Does Minimum of Two endorse this attitude in life? Tim Winton's collection of short stories, "Minimum of Two", endorses the importance of not only enduring but coming out on top. Through the often inspiring tales of Rachel, Queenie and the unnamed girl in "The Water was Dark and it went Forever Down", the reader becomes aware of the necessity of persisting to succeed. Nevertheless, Winton presents the characters who don't survive, who don't win and in many ways fail with sympathy and understanding. The "weaker" male characters such as Jerra and Neil Madigan are examples of people who fall short of their expectations and do not endure life with the attitude of "You need to just go, that was it; survive, win." In the story "The Water was Dark and it went Forever Down", the main character, who is identified as a fourteen year old girl, has lost her father and has a difficult relationship with her alcoholic, reclusive mother. The "winning is all" mentality is shown through the young girl's belief in the web of life - "The sick and the weak died and the young and the strong lived and thrived". The girl is a courageous figure who forms her own principles and lives by them. She is independent and not reliant on anyone else. Her strength is distinguished through her decision that she must leave her mother in order to survive.

WAS WORLD WAR 1 THE OUTCOME OF IMPERIALISM? From the year 1870 till 1914, countries across Europe and Americas were having a common disease called 'Imperialism'. Every single superpower was keen on expanding their empire and annexed maximum colonies as possible. This led to an immense tension between the countries and also caused insecurity within them. We are about to discuss whether or not, 'Was World War 1 the outcome of Imperialism?' Since the beginning of 1870 itself, British and the French have been wealthy nations. America had attained independence from the British. As the British were expanding their empire, tensions seemed to rise amongst the neighbors as well as other powerful countries. Annexation of countries became a competition, for more colonies, as it depicted more power. When France started taking up colonies in Africa, the British became insecure and started competing by taking over parts of Asian countries. As America was slowly emerging to be a superpower, by being victorious over Spanish, Japan was a powerful nation in Asia with a strong empire and colonies. Germany and USA began their imperialism almost during the same time. USA had defeated the Spanish and Germany had newly entered the imperialism list. USA chose to expand for domestic reasons as well as for economic issues. Businessmen and politicians suffered economic depression. The Panic of 1893

Reaction Time

Abstract The focus of this study was to investigate how the participation of different sports activities affects the reaction time. Two hypotheses were established based on my research question: "People who carry out sports should have a faster reaction time than those who do not" and "The sport where a fast reaction time is most important, thus where training sessions focus on improving it the most, should have a participants with faster reaction time than the sport where a fast reaction time is less important". The sports chosen were boxing, badminton, stationary bicycle, judo and swimming. A control group was included. In every group there were 20 participants where 10 subjects were women, 10 subjects were men, 10 subjects in the age group 10-17 and 10 subjects in the age group 18-40. The test was carried out using a reaction timer software installed on a laptop. The results showed that people who carry out sports do have a faster reaction time than people who do not. The average reaction time for people not carrying out sports was 0.305 seconds compared with 0.266 seconds that was the average reaction time for the slowest group of people carrying out sports, namely the people carrying out stationary bicycle. The investigation also revealed that the sport where a fast reaction time is most significant for winning a competition has participants with the fastest reaction

This magnetic field has the same properties as normal magnetic field in all aspects except that the field is oriented in a closed circle around the conductor following the right hand rule. Symbols In this experiment following symbols are used: B = magnetic field [T] I = current [A] V = voltage [V] R = resistance [?] r = radius [m] µ0 = permeability of free space (constant) [4?*10-7 TmA-1] Aim The scientist is supposed to investigate the relationship between current and magnetic field in a conductor by running a varying current through a circuit and measure the magnetic field induced by it. Furthermore the practical skills in the subject of the magnetism and electrical currents should improve. Research question How is the magnetic field

Duffys Poem, Valentine, is a thought provoking and interesting poem, in which an onion is used in the form of an extended metaphor to symbolise true love,

Carol Ann Duffy: Valentine Duffy's Poem, Valentine, is a thought provoking and interesting poem, in which an onion is used in the form of an extended metaphor to symbolise true love, in an unconventional, non-romantic way. The reader is subjected to a different approach to love, whereby, he is made to understand the parallelism between a mundane cooking ingredient and a Valentine's Day gift. The title, valentine, has jovial connotations associated with it, but judging from the word choice, viewpoint (voice) and pace of the poem, the reader is led to believe that Duffy assumes that an object of obscurity, such as an onion can also have happy connotations. "I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are." Duffy has also used words which make the message ambiguous as the reader does not really know how serious Duffy is about an onion being a Valentine's Day gift or whether she uses an onion as a object of effective comparison or she is frustrated with the idea of love and relationships. The whole expression of thought does help her in successfully achieving a gloomy and sedate mood and help the reader to interpret her work better. The use of diction and word choice in the poem is an effective device that Duffy uses to express the mood in the poem and aid the reader to understand the poems deeper message,

Carpet-weavers, Morocco by Carol Rumens In the poem "Carpet-weavers, Morocco" by Carol Rumens, she uses figurative language and concrete imagery to create a shifting mood. Furthermore, the structure of the poem leads the readers to an emotional end (an epiphany). In stanza 1, Rumens establishes the positive, fairytale mood by using figurative language and visual imagery. In line one, the poet uses the metaphor "loom of another world." Which suggest that the poet isn't from that place because the loom is different, from another culture. Line 2 describes the Moroccan children's hair and dresses using visual imagery; "Their braids are oiled and black, their dresses bright." This gives the reader an idea of how the children are. A positive mood is created which you can tell from the "bright dresses" since it is related to joy, beauty and good things. She then uses both metaphor and sound imagery; "Their assorted heights would make a melodious chime" which once again creates a joyful mood. Carol uses figurative language and imagery to change the joyful mood to a dark and gothic mood in stanza 2. The 4th line shows the reader that the children are focusing and staring at the "flickering knots", and she uses a simile to compare the flickering knots to television. The effect is that it shows that the children have nothing to do, and they probably come from a poor place since there

The Past of Unatoned Sins: Kite Runner By Megg Collins ENG 3UIB For Mr. Thompson October 15, 2007 Collins Page 1 4/26/2008 Khaled Hosseini's allegorical novel, The Kite Runner tells the story of the rise and downfall of the relationship of the main characters, Amir and Hassan, and inadvertently the rise and downfall of Afghanistan. More importantly, is how the main characters are symbolical to important Afghani figures, and how the main themes of this novel are symbolical to Afghani life. The novel, The Kite Runner is an excellent example of an allegory between the powerful story told throughout the pages, and the everyday life of Afghanistan. Firstly, in Khaled Hosseini's novel, the main characters of the novel prove to be highly symbolic to important Afghani figures. Amir the narrator of the story tells his story as a young coward child and his growth into a brave man who is ready to stick up for him and the one he loved most. Amir's defining moment as a child is when he makes the ultimate decision "I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be... In the end, I ran. I ran because I was a coward." (Hosseini 77) This moment marks Amir as a coward. Amir represents the average Pashtun. Too afraid for sticking up for what is right, but then thinking being sympathetic is enough. Assef is another very important character

The circular flow of income and particular the injections and leakages have a substantial influence on the economic activity of the time. Economic activity is defined as the production and distribution of goods and service in an economy,

Explain how changes in the levels on injections and leakages can change the level of economic activity The circular flow of income and partrticular the injections and leakages have a substantial influence on the economic activity of the time. Economic activity is defined as the production and distribution of goods and service in an economy, processes like Government expenditure (G), investment (I), exports (X), imports (M), savings (S), and taxation (T) all play an important role in the level of activity within an economy. Savings is a significant process in the circular flow of income. This process is classified as a leakage as it involves people removing funds which would otherwise be spent. When the leakage is taking place it reduces the amount of money that could be spent on purchasing goods or services. This will result in a drop in demand which will be responded to by a drop in production. This drop in demand and production is otherwise known as a decrease in economic activity. Despite savings resulting in a drop in economic activity it is also the money that funds investment agencies. This means that the savings can be used as finance which may result in economic stimulas. The inverse effect of spending occurs when there is a great amount of investment within an economy. Investment is classified as an injection as it is an input of funds which may be used in the

The War and its Impacts on the Mentality of Soldiers in Stockings

Submitted By: Timothy Kim Submitted To: Mr. C. Penney Date: Monday, Oct. 6th, 2008 English 10 IBDP The War and its Impacts on the Mentality of Soldiers in Stockings More than two million people were involved in the Vietnamese war and the amounts of casualties were enormous, due to the fact that the war itself has continued for 16 years straight. In today's society, the Vietnamese War is an inevitable part of our history to be remembered of and many writers put their feelings of the war into a short story, a novel or a film such as the movies, Rambo and Forrest Gump. They all depict one true nature of a war and that's the ability of the wars to change any soldier's mentality into a state of mind that can be described as craziness or insanity. The war in its entirety shows us the glory and the power but for each individual who has suffered a physical damage or mental disorder, all the wars of all sorts are just not worthwhile. If the soldiers ever return home, almost all the soldiers come back to their home with a completely different mindset and they all get nightmares about their horrifying memories that they have lived through. We all think of veteran soldiers as having a post-traumatic stress disorder or crippled, physically and mentally, but the story, Stockings, shows us a different type of soldier that does not give in to this powerful effect and lives through the
