Fossil Fuels Introduction: Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources that formed more than 300 million years ago. Fossil fuels are made up of plant and animal matter. When plants and animals died, their bodies decomposed and were buried under layers of earth. Millions of years later we have the three forms of fossil fuel: oil, natural gas and coal. A form of non-renewable source. Uses of fossil fuels: Fossil fuels are burnt to release energy in the form of heat. This energy can be used to power cars, produce electricity, heat homes, cook food etc. The procedure for the conversion of the fossil fuels to electricity. First, the fuel (whether it's coal, oil, or gas) is burned in a furnace at very high temperatures. The furnace then superheats water into steam. The steam creates enormous amounts of pressure which is used to rotate a turbine, (which is like a set of very tightly packed fan blades on a shaft). The steam rushing past the fan blades causes the shaft to rotate very quickly. The rotor of the generator is attached to the shaft, which then produce electrical power (flow of electrons). Variables: - Independent: * Type of solution used: Cu(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, Pb(NO3)2 * The concentration of the each solution. - Dependant: * The mass change in the cathode and anode - Controlled * The amount of time * The metals used for both rods * The temperature of the solutions Materials: - Power supply - Voltmeter - Zinc and Copper metal rods - Circuit wire - Beakers - Salt Bridge - Sand Paper - Crocodile clips - Graduating Cylinder - Cu(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, Pb(NO3)2 - Weight Scale Procedure: - Set up a beaker with 300 mL of 1M Cu(NO3)2 - Set up the voltmeter so it's connected to the power supply, correctly and with crocodile clips - Set up the beakers and the salt bridge as shown in the diagram - Obtain small strips of filter paper, to be used as salt bridges. Wet each strip with Cu(NO3)2 and insert into the solution. Repeat for each of the three remaining salt solutions. - Start the power supply for 5 minutes and record the amount of voltage created. Roosevelt was anxious to secure Soviet cooperation in the Pacific War against Japan, and was thus willing to concede Russian dominance in Poland. 2. With a democratic institution with "free and unfettered" elections, Poland would become a legitimate democratic nation. Laura Dekker is een dertien jarig meisje dat de jongste solozeiler wil zijn dat rond de wereld zeilt. Niet lang geleden heeft een 17 jaar oude jongen van Engeland dit gedaan in 9 maanden.Laura zou er twee jaar over doen. Laura wil zeer graag hiermee in het Guinnes Book of World Records geraken, maar zij zeggen dat ook al moest ze het doen zouden ze haar er niet in vermelden. Laura zou twee jaar lang moeten zeilen zou ze dit doen, dus zou ze ook twee jaar school missen. Ze zegt dat dit geen probleem voor haar zal zijn want zij zou elke dag op haar bootje leren wat andere kinderen op dat moment zouden leren. Iets wat ik denk dat ze zal laten vallen na een maand of drie. Laura's ouders zijn gescheiden haar vader wil absoluut dat zij gaat zeilen rond de wereld maar haar moeder wil het niet.Omdat haar moeder het niet wil,dreigt Laura contact te breken met haar moeder maar zij zei "Ik heb liever een levende dochter dat ik niet meer zie dan een dode dochter." Natuurlijk zijn er dus gevaren, ze gaat op zeer gevaarlijke zeen varen en psychologen denken niet dat zij twee jaar alleen kan zijn. Laura's bootje is ook vrij klein, maar 8 meter lang en zij zal in zeer brutale stormen moeten varen. Comparison of Metamorphosis and The Outsider The two openings of Metamorphosis and the Outsider are different in there beginnings but when they start to get to the end of the opening they begin to become very similar. They both wake up to different things, Gregor has been transformed into a giant bug and Meursault awakes to his mother death. The biggest difference between the characters is their physical form. Gregor has changed physically into a giant insect and Meursault remains a human being through the story. The characters also have different relationships with their mothers. It seems as though Gregor would like to have a great relationship with his mother, but under the circumstances cannot, having been turned into a giant insect and all. Meursault didn't seem to care that much that his mom passed away by his attitude which leads me to believe that him and his mom did not have the greatest relationship. Kafka creates a very lonely, cut off world for Gregor. In "Metamorphosis" Gregor feels more like an outsider when he awakes to find himself turned into a giant bug without any specific reason and no longer has control over his own life. He breaks off all connections to the world and to the people in his life; he does not talk or have any other kind of interaction with anyone inside or outside the family. Comparing Lovborg and Tesman's roll in fulfilling Hedda's needs Ibsen uses contrasting aspects of the two characters Eilert Lovborg and George Tesman to highlight the wide range of desires Hedda has when it came to being satisfied in a relationship. This highlights Hedda's incapability to be satisfied by only one man, representing how she will always want more than what she can have. These two characters are very different, but they have certain qualities that make them similar. Both characters have feelings for Hedda, and they have been at one point or another been in a relationship with her. In addition the two men are both authors even though they write about different subjects. The similarity between them signifies Hedda's attraction to men who are relatively intelligent, as Hedda has no trace of falling for a man who has no skill. Both men are authors which represent knowledge, a trait Hedda highly regards. Although several similarities, Tesman's marriage is fake compared to Lovborg's relationship with Hedda which was portrayed to be more natural. This can be conveyed through many things for example Tesman and Hedda's marriage happened mainly because of social conformity. There are various strategies which are made use of when transferring capital between the core and peripheral areas. These are mainly loans and debt repayment, remittances, foreign direct investment and the repatriation of profits. Loans and debt repayment is used worldwide in which the developing countries collectively owe $2.3 trillion to foreign creditors. The advantages brought by such a transfer of capital between core and peripheral areas is the opportunity countries get to finance necessary resources in order to build up and develop themselves by improving their education and housing in Sub-Saharan Africa for example. The total money owed has however been cut due to the HIPC plan which reduced the 218$ billion owed to $180 billion. A Literary Commentary: the L-Shaped Room
A Literary Commentary At rock-bottom, pregnant, in a dark, dirty room, and sharing the building with prostitutes, one may still (surprisingly!) have thought to spare in noticing the irony of their situation. The extract from "The L-Shaped Room," by Lynne Reid Banks, is taken from page 1 of chapter 1, so even without reading, it can be understood that the purpose of it is to 'set the scene' and introduce the main character, or at least provide an interesting and grasping introduction to the novel. It is not too clear if there was a definite intention other than that in three paragraphs, but there is a substantially big revelation in relation to the narrative character at the end of the last paragraph, that she was pregnant. The extract takes readers into the mind of that woman as they read her thoughts in relation to the place she is in and the people around her, which are many times ironic and to a certain extent funny (black humour), even though, at first glance, the extract seems dull, melancholic and bleak. For example, the sign that read "Don't Leave Tap Driping" with its orthographical error, her decision not to clean the window since "what the hell, no one's going to see it," which shows that she is not as depressed as we might be lead to think of as she has enough energy to comment on her surroundings.
