World Energy resources

Fossil Fuels Introduction: Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources that formed more than 300 million years ago. Fossil fuels are made up of plant and animal matter. When plants and animals died, their bodies decomposed and were buried under layers of earth. Millions of years later we have the three forms of fossil fuel: oil, natural gas and coal. A form of non-renewable source. Uses of fossil fuels: Fossil fuels are burnt to release energy in the form of heat. This energy can be used to power cars, produce electricity, heat homes, cook food etc. The procedure for the conversion of the fossil fuels to electricity. First, the fuel (whether it's coal, oil, or gas) is burned in a furnace at very high temperatures. The furnace then superheats water into steam. The steam creates enormous amounts of pressure which is used to rotate a turbine, (which is like a set of very tightly packed fan blades on a shaft). The steam rushing past the fan blades causes the shaft to rotate very quickly. The rotor of the generator is attached to the shaft, which then produce electrical power (flow of electrons). The following steps show how the fossil fuels are used to produce electricity: Note: The Oil and Gas can be burnt directly but the coal is first crushed to a fine dust and then burned. Advantages Disadvantages Relatively cheap Will run out High energy density or

Yalta and Potsdam Conferences

The Yalta and Potsdam Conferences Yalta Conference . Why Did Roosevelt and Churchill agree to allow the Soviet-sponsored Provisional Government to continue in power in Poland? Roosevelt was anxious to secure Soviet cooperation in the Pacific War against Japan, and was thus willing to concede Russian dominance in Poland. 2. Why did they want it reorganized to include democratic leaders and committed to "free and unfettered" elections? With a democratic institution with "free and unfettered" elections, Poland would become a legitimate democratic nation. Since the Soviet Union was communist and therefore not aligned with this form of government, it would enable Poland to stand in the way of Soviet foreign policy in Poland and also in the greater Eastern Europe, and this would also be instrumental in allowing Britain and the US to legitimately establish diplomatic relations with Poland. 3. What factors would make it possible for the Soviets to establish communist control in Poland, despite these provisions? Wording in the document such as: "the Polish Provisional Government of National Unity shall be pledged to the holding of free and unfettered elections as soon as possible" enables the Soviets to control Poland until the time for democracy is necessary. This line is ambiguous and allows for multiple points of interpretation. Moreover, Roosevelt was anxious for Russian

Metamorphosis comparison

Comparison of Metamorphosis and The Outsider The two openings of Metamorphosis and the Outsider are different in there beginnings but when they start to get to the end of the opening they begin to become very similar. They both wake up to different things, Gregor has been transformed into a giant bug and Meursault awakes to his mother death. The biggest difference between the characters is their physical form. Gregor has changed physically into a giant insect and Meursault remains a human being through the story. The characters also have different relationships with their mothers. It seems as though Gregor would like to have a great relationship with his mother, but under the circumstances cannot, having been turned into a giant insect and all. Meursault didn't seem to care that much that his mom passed away by his attitude which leads me to believe that him and his mom did not have the greatest relationship. Kafka creates a very lonely, cut off world for Gregor. In "Metamorphosis" Gregor feels more like an outsider when he awakes to find himself turned into a giant bug without any specific reason and no longer has control over his own life. He breaks off all connections to the world and to the people in his life; he does not talk or have any other kind of interaction with anyone inside or outside the family. He did not want to end all connections, but he had to because of

Tesman and Lovborgs ability to fulfill Hedda's needs

Comparing Lovborg and Tesman's roll in fulfilling Hedda's needs Ibsen uses contrasting aspects of the two characters Eilert Lovborg and George Tesman to highlight the wide range of desires Hedda has when it came to being satisfied in a relationship. This highlights Hedda's incapability to be satisfied by only one man, representing how she will always want more than what she can have. These two characters are very different, but they have certain qualities that make them similar. Both characters have feelings for Hedda, and they have been at one point or another been in a relationship with her. In addition the two men are both authors even though they write about different subjects. The similarity between them signifies Hedda's attraction to men who are relatively intelligent, as Hedda has no trace of falling for a man who has no skill. Both men are authors which represent knowledge, a trait Hedda highly regards. Although several similarities, Tesman's marriage is fake compared to Lovborg's relationship with Hedda which was portrayed to be more natural. This can be conveyed through many things for example Tesman and Hedda's marriage happened mainly because of social conformity. At this time it was socially unacceptable for a woman to decline a wedding proposal from an ideal man. Also, Hedda states that her "time was up" (pg251) and that Tesman was "a thoroughly acceptable

PORTFOLIO TYPE I - MATHEMATICAL INVESTIGATION -MATRIX BINOMIALS- Student: Domazet Neven SL In this portfolio,my assignment is to deal with matrix binomials, and to investigate them. At first,my initial matrices are as follows: and Now,my task is to find and calculate following matrices: : X2, X3, X4; Y2,Y3 and Y4 So,since and we will calculate that as We know that we can express multiplication of matrices as ,and it goes like ,so we get that , thus. Or 2* =2* X As we now know this,it is easy to calculate ,because or 2*X*X,which is 2*2*X or it is equal to 22*X and equal to . is defined as X3*X=22 *X*X=22 *2*X=23 *X and our solution is = Procedure for Y is completely the same as for X,and we do not have to go in details,so to calculate the products of , and , we will use the TI-84 Plus Texas Instruments Graphic Calculator and obtain the results in the following form ( [B] equals Y) The results are as follows: ; and . Now to continue with our work we need our previous results, because they can help us to find , and .Results are shown in table below Here we can see some characteristics which can help us in our work, and we will stick to them, and applying the rule to the results we will get the following matrix identities: ; ; ; . Examine the strategies used in the transfer of capital between core and peripheral areas

Geography HL Essay: Examine the strategies used in the transfer of capital between core and peripheral areas. There are various strategies which are made use of when transferring capital between the core and peripheral areas. These are mainly loans and debt repayment, remittances, foreign direct investment and the repatriation of profits. Loans and debt repayment is used worldwide in which the developing countries collectively owe $2.3 trillion to foreign creditors. The advantages brought by such a transfer of capital between core and peripheral areas is the opportunity countries get to finance necessary resources in order to build up and develop themselves by improving their education and housing in Sub-Saharan Africa for example. The total money owed has however been cut due to the HIPC plan which reduced the 218$ billion owed to $180 billion. As a result of these loans and repayments, food, clothing, housing, medicines and medical care became cheaper and simultaneously, their quality improved since earlier times. This as a result makes it easier and better for LEDCs to afford such resources, benefiting their standard of living and development of their economy. The loans and debts still however need to be repaid, and as a result countries will need to pay interest on this and pay back the principal. Even bad loans will have to be repaid, and especially for LEDCs this can

A Literary Commentary: the L-Shaped Room

A Literary Commentary At rock-bottom, pregnant, in a dark, dirty room, and sharing the building with prostitutes, one may still (surprisingly!) have thought to spare in noticing the irony of their situation. The extract from "The L-Shaped Room," by Lynne Reid Banks, is taken from page 1 of chapter 1, so even without reading, it can be understood that the purpose of it is to 'set the scene' and introduce the main character, or at least provide an interesting and grasping introduction to the novel. It is not too clear if there was a definite intention other than that in three paragraphs, but there is a substantially big revelation in relation to the narrative character at the end of the last paragraph, that she was pregnant. The extract takes readers into the mind of that woman as they read her thoughts in relation to the place she is in and the people around her, which are many times ironic and to a certain extent funny (black humour), even though, at first glance, the extract seems dull, melancholic and bleak. For example, the sign that read "Don't Leave Tap Driping" with its orthographical error, her decision not to clean the window since "what the hell, no one's going to see it," which shows that she is not as depressed as we might be lead to think of as she has enough energy to comment on her surroundings. Her conversation with the woman about the prostitutes also

What would be of us Without a Setting to stand on?

Richard Rodriguez IB World Literature Word Count: 800 Title: What would be of us Without a Setting to stand on? Thesis Q. How does setting play a major role in understanding a dynamic character in Shakespeare's Othello? The setting of this Tragedy plays a significant role in understanding Iago's character, because it influences his personality and the consequences of his unspeakable actions, which ultimately leads him and other characters to the point of catastrophe. The setting of stories often leads to the development and understanding of a character and what is truly inside of them. In Othello, Iago in the outside is Othello's must trusted advisor. However, he hides an obsessive and spiteful rage against Othello, Cassio, and Desdemona; as he tries to manipulate their actions and feelings to destroy one another, for his own enjoyment. The rising conflict makes it doubtful what causes "honest" Iago to be this way? The setting of this Tragedy plays a significant role in understanding Iago's character, because it influences his personality and the consequences of his unspeakable actions, which ultimately leads him and other characters to the point of catastrophe. Iago's setting contributes to the "ancient's" ability to control others, inner conflicts, and actions. Iago is brilliant with his understanding of human behavior, and a talent to manipulate the
