An assessment of the factors, which affect the catchment area and popularity of shopping centres.

The aim of this project is contained within the title; which factors affect the catchment area and popularity of shopping centres. The main aim can be divided into smaller questions, which I will answer with the data that will collect:

  • Do places with a greater variety of shops attract more people?
  • Will people travel further to buy high order goods than they will to buy low order goods?
  • What importance does quality of shopping environment have for attracting shoppers?

The collection of data

  The questions asked in the investigation will be answered by first collecting data ‘in the field’ and the analysing the data in order to answer them. Building Use surveys, questionnaires, photos, sketches, pedestrian counts and audits will be used to collect the data in the two chosen sites.

  The first site chosen is Bracknell (field trip day) and the second site Woodley (independent research). I have chosen these two sites, as they are both very different, Bracknell being a large shopping area in the town centre and Woodley being a small towns shopping precinct. Both shopping centres show contrasts in different areas of the investigation e.g. a difference of high order and low order shops. Having two different types of shopping centres is important so that when the data has been collected a suitable conclusion to the question: ~
