Explain the Role of Motivation in Enhancing Sports Performance

Motivation is a key aspect in enhancing sporting performances. Sage (1974) state that motivation is ‘the internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour. This can be divided into three statements:

  • ‘Motivation involves our inner drives towards achieving goals
  • Motivation depends on external pressures and rewards
  • Motivation concerns our arousal level and the direction of our behaviour’

This quote applies to all different aspects in sport regarding motivation, especially arousal, self efficacy, self confidence and feedback. In order to explain these roles of motivation in sport, I will use netball, squash and swimming as a team games, racket games and individual activities.

There are two different types of motivation. These are extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation takes place in two ways: emotionally and physically. Emotion is how people react to the athlete’s performance. For example, in a swimming gala, if a swimmer wins a race, their parent may congratulate them and give them praise. This comment may encourage the swimmer to aim to win more races as they then can receive more positive feedback and praise. In reference to the physical side, this would mean that the athlete receives medals and trophies (tangible rewards). An example of an external factor is, for example, in the Commonwealth games in netball, if a country is in the final, their motivation would be the trophies and medals that would come out of being the best netball team in the Commonwealth. Intrinsic motivation is the internal drive, and would include drives such as emotional feelings. An example of this is in a squash match when the athlete is participating solely on the fact that they are there to have fun and to feel a sense of pride and satisfaction if they win. The squash player would not take into consideration what everyone else thinks as they are playing the game as a recreational sport. In some sporting cases motivation is a mixture of both striving to win or to achieve recognition. However, it is said that if there is too much emphasis on winning the performer will concentrate only on that goal and will not think about the pleasure of taking part.

Motivation is linked to the intensity and direction of behaviour. Arousal levels are represented by the intensity aspect of motivation. It is a state of alertness and anticipation, with its purpose being to prepare the body for action. Physiological effects of this arousal include increased heart beat, breathing and sweat production. For maintaining all types of motivation whilst participating in sport it is a key factor. However, arousal levels can be negative as well as positive. The Yerkes Dodson Law states that ‘performance increases as arousal increases, but only up to a certain point, where higher levels of arousal ...
