G.C.S.E Mathematics Coursework Task: Maxi Product

Introduction

For this coursework task I have been asked to find the maximum product.  For this I have to find two numbers which add up to 12 and make the maximum product.

The maximum product is the number that can be made by two numbers which add up together to make 12.

E.g.

        11 + 1 = 12

        11 x 1 = 11

The first set of numbers when added together make 12 and when they are multiplied, that is there maximum product.

I am going to investigate the products of numbers that are added together to make 12 and try to find the maximum product.

This is a table showing maximum products of 12.

Number pairs                Added together         multiplied together                 Product

The highest product here is 36.

All the numbers in the table are whole numbers.  I will now use numbers with halves in them to see if I can find a product higher than 36.

I predict that I will not find a number higher than 36 using halves because you can only the highest product with whole numbers.  I will now draw out the table to test my prediction.

I will also go further into my investigation by using 0.7,0.8 and 0.9.

I have noticed in my tables that the maxi product of 12 is 6 and 6 which when multiplied together make 36.

Patterns

In my second table I have noticed that each time the maxi product increases the difference between the maxi product and the next maxi product decreases by 2 each time.
