Indian Oil which is the largest commercial enterprise is the highest ranked Indian company in the prestigious Fortune Global 500 listing, the 116th position (in 2008) based on fiscal 2007 performance. It is also the 18th largest petroleum company in the world and the number one petroleum trading company among the National Oil Companies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Indian oil is India’s largest oil refiner having 10 refineries of the total 19 present in the country. It used to be the only importer of oil in the country a few years back. It is a public sector petroleum company with an 80% government holding. Its refineries have a total capacity of 60.2 million metric tons per year and the group also has 9300Km of pipelines, 32,500 retail outlets and operates a chain of over 16,500 gas stations across India. It also distributes ‘Indane’ cooking gas to over 47 million households through its 5000 distributors.

In addition, Indian Oil's Research and Development Centre (R&D) at Faridabad supports, develops and provides the necessary technology solutions to the operating divisions of the corporation and its customers within the country and abroad. The R&D centre has been modelled on the R&D marketing arms of Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum.

Indian Oil's product range covers petrol, diesel, LPG, auto LPG, aviation turbine fuel, lubricants, naphtha, bitumen, paraffin, kerosene etc. Xtra Premium branded petrol, Xtra Mile high speed diesel, Servo lubricants, Indane LPG, Autogas LPG, Indian Oil Aviation are some of its prominent brands.
Recently Indian Oil has also introduced a new business line of supplying LNG (Liquefied natural gas) by the cryogenic transportation. The branding called "LNG at Doorstep".
