Over the past few decades, transport has had enormous impacts on society; it has brought significant changes to economies and lifestyles in the modern world. As the UK’s national income is generated through international trade in goods and services, there has been a rapid rise in the demand of transport that to sustain economic success (Eddington 2006). Moreover, a successful economy causing higher income and a growing number of people demand to travel to work or for leisure purposes. In the UK, most people need about three trips and covering about 10.7 kilometers every day. But British make less walking and cycling than Europe, train trips and bus trips accounted for approximately 6 percent of total passenger-kilometers respectively in 2001. By contrast, the percentage of passenger travel by car has increased form 80% to 86% between 1985 and 2001 (Eddington 2006). Hence, British have heavily relied on private cars and use less public transport. Some people argue that this represents British have a higher quality of life and economic success. However, this can create significant transport problems such as congestion and pollution for society and there is a higher expenditure spent in the transport problems and real concerns about the lifestyles in the future (Eddington 2006). By applying the practical transport problems in the UK, this essay will evaluate a range of solutions to these transport problems.

Over the last twenty years, the fares of public transport have increased rapidly. By contrast, the cost of motoring has remained approximately same levels since 1980. As income rise, many people prefer traveling by car. In comparison to alternative modes of transport such as cycling, walking and taking bus, private car can make people traveling faster and further and commuting longer distances to work. Hence, the private car usage has increased dramatically (Sloman 2003). On the other hand, it has created a significant amount of traffic problems, including congestion, pollution and the security of travel.

One of the most significant problems of excessive private car use is traffic congestion. This is common faced virtually all countries, particularly in the urban areas at peak times with the widespread transport such as car.
