It has meant that safari holidays have become extremely popular. They are very well advertised now all over the world with many different tour operators doing package holidays and special deals to a good safari destination. Due to hunting being banned there was at one point a limit of job opportunities for the locals as fear of being known as poachers if they were caught. But once the safari parks were under way it means that the parks are better looked after and cared for as there are many people working in them to ensure that the tourists enjoy there holiday.
- Compile a list of changing socio-economic conditions in Britain and how have these changes affected tourism?
The half day act was passed in the mid 1860’s. This meant that workers were allowed to half a day off on a Saturday that would still be paid. This meant that workers could spend a day with the family and with friends and go to the nearest tourist attraction. After the Second World War the amount of people that took paid holidays increased due to the Paid Holidays Act being introduced. In 1951, 66% of manual workers were allowed two weeks off every year, with 28% having one week off. And then 1970, 41% had 2 weeks off and 52% had 3 or more weeks off.
Package holidays were introduced e.g. Thomas cook. This would include transport to the destination as well as accommodation and now a day’s even food. These holidays were made possible as people had more leisure time. Also, after the Second World War, military aircraft that was used in combat was converted into aeroplanes which could carry civilians to their destinations. Also, jet aircrafts such as the Boeing 747 were introduced in the 1950’s which dramatically increased the amount of people that took these package holidays. This has all dramatically increased the amount of tourism and the incomes of the locals as people often takes excursions and wish to purchase local goods as souvenirs.
Car ownership has dramatically increased from 250,000 in 1919 to 20,000,000 in 1993. There was a 500% increase after the Second World War. Due to more people having cars due to the increase in them and the decrease in price for a car, it means that people are able to get about fairly cheaply to travel to different hot spots of tourist destinations. Also, due to the increase in the amount of cars it has meant that thousands of roads have been built including motor ways.
- Consider different forms of transport and comment on each type in relation to tourism.
Train: Trains run regularly and most big stations e.g. Kings cross, Liverpool street station, have interchanges to get onto different lines e.g. the London underground. It is cheap and easy travel and is very little hassle for tourists as does not involve too much hassle when it comes to directions to take and rush hours. Delays are rarely experienced but if they are experienced can be quite long. Commuters tend to use trains a lot as it reduces the risk of delays.
Private car: These are considered to be more comfortable and the tourist would have more say in where they could go, how long they wanted the journey to be, food and beverage stops and general breaks to sightsee and to take a rest. Many internet sites now do step by step guides on how to reach a destination so this makes the experience a lot easier and less hassle. More roads are constantly being built and refurbished to make the journey safer, quicker and less hassle.
Motorway travel: There is constant maintenance work and regeneration of motorways due to the fact that they are used so much. They provide a quick and easy way to get to a destination by car. They provide many places to stop for petrol, beverages and food, rests and also restrooms that sometimes have showers. Some motorway services also have hotels. If the destination is wanted to reach in the quickest time the motorway is best as the ‘A’ roads tend to be quite slow at times, especially in rush hour.
Cruise liners and ferries: Ferries now do not only cross the channel tunnel to reach between England and France. It is now possible to leave England and then one week later be soaking up the hot weather in the Caribbean or down in the warm Mediterranean. Cruise holidays generally are popular for older retired couples. It is not generally found that families with children go on cruise liners just for the fact that when travelling to the destination it can be quite tedious at times. There are many opportunities to go on different excursions once the destinations are reached on the cruise ship. This is very appealing for the tourist. When a tourist travels over to France it is a possibility to use the channel tunnel but the ferry allows the tourist to ahev a break and a decent meal with good facilities before a potentially long drive.
The aeroplane: This is one of the biggest ways on that tourism has increased. Tourists can now travel to any country that they wish by aeroplane in an easy manner and be in a clean and comfortable environment. It allows fast travel to the destination. The prices are continually coming down when it comes to air travel due to the low cost airlines such as Ryan air and Easy jet. Air travel is constantly being upgraded and improved. A new air bus has been introduced which includes top of the range in-flight entertainment in the form of game boys and televisions with 30 different channels. In first class the seats turn into beds at night so you get a full and proper night sleep. Air travel is a very appealing way to travel for tourists just simple due to the fact that it is so comfortable and easy.
