In the first term of my year I have contributed greatly to school life. For instance, I work and play with the younger children in After School club every Wednesday as well as assisting Preparatory children in the development of their reading skills. I have always enjoying working with young children and I would like to continue to do so to make the time spent by pupils, younger and older, at Old Palace memorable. I have also taken part in the Young Enterprise scheme, which I have a keen interest in. I am the Marketing Director of my Young Enterprise business; “Nineteen” and I have taken the role of Managing Director for one meeting. Both of these positions require leadership skills and a lot of work and preparation outside the business meetings. At first I did not speak up when I did not agree with business actions. However, I have learnt how to seek and accept opinions from people working in the different elements of the business, such as the Finance team to help everybody come together to form carefully thought out decisions to make our business a success. Some may say I have become a feisty businessperson although I disagree by saying all is fair in love and business. I was also recently one of the Assistant Stage Managers in “Oliver”, which brought back many memories of plays I participated in and helped out with when I was in the Preparatory school. Simultaneously I was able to talk to students from the younger years whom I had never spoken to before. As Head Girl I would aim to reduce boundaries, which exist between year groups. I also took part in a Cambridge Union debate where the motions were “Work for the Dole” and “Legalisation of polygamy.” For the latter I was opposing the motion and found this enjoyable to argue easily why it would be ludicrous for one to walk down the aisle on one’s wedding day with as many prospective husbands and wives on each hand as desired! Out of all the activities I took part in last term, I enjoyed the debate the most, as it enabled me to work together with my team member and project my voice to an audience with ease.
During my year of office, I would aim to continue the good work of Lucy, our current Head Girl. The principal change I would make is to remove the invisible but occurring barriers, which exist between year groups, form groups and Sixth Form, Senior school, and Preparatory classes. I would help to strengthen the unity of the school by initiating an initial brainstorming session to work with the rest if the Head Girls’ Team to come up with ideas of ways to break down these barriers. I would also like to carry out changes, which students would like to see occur, if agreed by senior management. I would also like to see more student-led assemblies. For example, there could be a regular assembly run by the Head Girls’ Team to inform the school of any new issues. I would also hope to introduce a box of some sort, into which students can place notes about any problems they may have or matters they would like to be dealt with by the Head Girls’ Team.
I would support the Head of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form tutors by speaking with the individual teachers to discuss any matters of concern or if they would desire help for any tasks they may have. I would also continue having regular meetings with the rest of the Sixth Form through which messages can be relayed from the Head of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form tutors, to the Sixth Formers.
I would be able to manage the additional workload by continuing to balance extra-curricular activities with school work as well as work needed to be completed by the Head Girls’ Team. I would also follow the recommendation of the current Head Girl, by having a separate notebook containing work needed to be done by the Head Girls’ Team to ensure I am organised and tasks are completed. As Head Girl I would also delegate tasks to the other members of the Head Girls’ Team so that work is shared out and, equally gratitude is also collective.
→I would ensure that Sixth Formers continue to play an important role on the Senior Department site by motivating Sixth Formers to uphold standards since Sixth Formers are the oldest students in the school and must set a good example to the rest of the Senior school. I would also intend to encourage Sixth Formers to become involved in evenings such as Parents’ Evenings and tours and other Senior school activities, showing initiative for the rest. I would also make sure the Sixth Formers volunteer to work alongside teachers should teachers require assistance.
→In conclusion, I consider myself to be a mature, hard-working and proficient person, who is seen as someone with a friendly and positive approach to work, colleagues and friends. I constantly aim to perform well and provide high standards for any tasks set, delivering them within the designated time period. I feel confident that I possess the necessary personal and academic qualities required to be Head Girl. I realise it will be difficult to take the Head Girl position from such a multi-talented current Head Girl, but I will do my best and strive to continue her good work, this coming year.
