The welcome note simply says ‘Welcome To’ and in a formal font which is again ‘Arial’. The welcome note used is probably the most simple and most often used to welcome and one new weather it is a shop booklet or a building.
The background image strip is probably the first that I have ver come across. The strip is very technical and contains small images of very sophisticated and advanced technology which exists in the world today. The strip is placed just below the school logo ‘Moor End Technology College’ which makes the school look as if it is really technological. The images that are inside the strip are a computer mouse, a CD Rom, the ports on the back of a computer workstation and a computer chip which makes the school like it is very technological. The strip is in the background of the front cover and also uses no colour. There is only a slight bit of colour but again it is in a school colour which is red and also has been toned and tinted the image strip to a maroon colour. The strip is used to give the reader an impression that the school is very technological which it is because it is a ‘Technology College’.
The mission statement, ‘ Excellence for all in a caring community’ has a lot of messages behind it. First of all the words ‘Excellence for all’ mean that the school wants everyone to do and achieve good. It does not care which race you are or what background you come from because it just wants you to do well if you are a pupil at the school. The second part of the mission statement ‘in a caring community’ is simply what it says. It’s suggested that the school likes to look after everybody and care for everybody, not only just to do well. The mission statement is very powerful and puts across a very good message to the reader. It also used some alliteration, ‘caring community’.
The image on the front cover is of a boy and a girl which shows that the school is not a sexist school. Both pupils in the picture seem to be happy and enjoying their work which gives an impression that pupils at moor end seem to be happy to do their work. Another thing is that the work they are doing is science which some say or used to say is not for girls but at moor end every gender can do any subject which is another sign that moor end is not a sexist school. The other noticeable thing is that not only is it a boy and a girl but they both come from different backgrounds. This shows the at moor end it doesn’t matter if you’re white, black or asian you will be thought the same as everyone else. This also links to our mission statement which is ‘Excellence for all in a caring community’ which is exactly how it is at Moor End Technology College.
Another picture that I think shows a positive aspect of Moor End Technology College is a picture of a teacher with some pupils. The image is in black and white which possibly suggests old fashioned values. The angle the picture is taken at is straight-on. The picture is fairly large and covers almost the entire bottom half of the brochure page. The picture has 4 pupils in it but I think only 3 of them are the focus. There is a boy with two girls sitting next to him on each side. The boy in the middle is an asian boy and the two girls sitting next to him are white. Again this sows that moor end is not a racist school and also everyone gets on with each other weather you are a girl working with a boy or two boys both from different races. Behind the pupils is a teacher who is leaning over all three of the pupils which looks like to me as if she ids their mother looking after them which links backs to out mission statement ‘in a caring community’. The teacher looks happy and enthusiastic which is trying to suggest that if the teachers like working with the pupils then the pupils of Moor End Technology College must be properly organised and the pupils must be very well self disciplined. The presence of the teacher in the image makes the image a lot clearer that they are in a community because she has her hands around them which makes them become a community.
The typeface used throughout the brochure is Arial. The font colour is mostly black too. In the columns on each edge of the pages the font colour is white because it has to stand out from a maroon background. A separate section of text on each is split by a heading which has been put in bold and makes it quite clear that it is a new section of information about the school. Also in some places there is use of italics like for example under the collective worship section it bolds and italics the words ‘The Silence’ which tries to emphasise and also to make it stand out. The key facts in the brochure have been put in a bulleted list which not only makes it stand out but also a lot easier to read the information more clearly. The actual points are also in a different coloured font which is red and again it is a school colour. This font colour and typeface makes the brochure a lot easy to read and is really well set out. This also makes the reading a lot easier on the eye.
Throughout the brochure the text which is written links back to our mission statement. As the reader reads the brochure, sub-conscious messages are put in the brain which is when thought about the reader can see that the school is always trying to say what they say in their mission statement which is why it is called the mission statement because it is their mission to make the school how they want it to be.
There are also a lot of quotations throughout the brochure which are from year 7 pupils, a parent and also from the Ofsted organisation. Ofsted is employed by the government but are an independent organisation who inspect school throughout England. These quotations are put in a column down the side of each page in the brochure. The columns contain the same images that the background strip on the front cover has.
The Ofsted quotations are deliberately put there because if Ofsted say that moor end is a good school than it must be the truth because
Ofsted are set to look at every school and comment on weather it is good, average or might need to close down. The language used by the Ofsted quotations is very formal. This is possibly because it is a very professional organisation. I wouldn’t say the language in the Ofsted report is persuasive because they are not to make the school look good but the quotations that the school have selected are persuasive because they want to show the reader how good the school is by choosing the best parts of the Ofsted report.
But one thing that the school cannot forget is that if they have put selective bits of the Ofsted and saying that the school is really good then they cannot get away with it. This is because the entire Ofsted will be available on their website which will enable parents to look at the full report and see if the report has any negative comments about the school which then might just change their mind of sending their child to moor end.
The quotations by the year 7 pupils are also very positive about the school too. This simply because if the reader sees that if this year 7 pupil has just started moor end and says that it is very good then it must be. The language this time is very simple English because it is a year 7 pupil saying it and also is not persuasive but the quotation that the school has put in is because again the school wants to persuade the reader to send their kids to moor end too. These quotes are probably most important because if they have just started moor end and they like it then it must be really good.
There is only one quotation that is from a parent and the language used in the quotation is not very sophisticated. The quote used is a thank you letter from the parent saying thank you for all your help. It is not very often that the school gets these kinds of letters. The letter is used because it wants to show the image that if one parent accepts that the school has done good tom her child than the school can do this to loads of other children too. The language in the quotation is also persuasive.
All of the language used in the brochure is persuasive because the school does in fact want to show their best image to the reader and also mainly to present the school good so that the parent reading the brochure will decide on sending their child to moor end.
Some aspects that are not mentioned and I think let the school brochure down is a bit about the school day, the options you get at the end of year 9 but mainly the school uniform. These three bits of information are needed so that parents can see how much lesson time the school offers and how much do they give for breaks and lunchtimes. Some parents might want to know the subjects that the school offers to study for GCSE if the child that is joining the school is going to start I year 10 or even year 11. The last bit of information which I think should most defiantly be in the brochure is the school uniform. This is because if a parent has decided to send their child to
moor end and has looked through the brochure for the school uniform and cannot find it, I personally will criticize the brochure a bit. But even though the brochure does not have this information on the pages it may be put on paper and inserted in the tabs on the inside back cover of the brochure which is why it might be put there for. Another aspect which is not mentioned is the school lunch arrangements but again it may be on paper and placed in the tabs at the back of the brochure.
I feel that the school brochure has said a lot about the school and has mainly emphasised a lot about the schools determination which is nicely put into a mission statement and also quite a lot about the schools curriculum. It has also said a lot about the school agreement between parents and the school and how they co-operate and keep in touch which I personally think makes the school look a lot more caring the organised. Overall I think the current information in the brochure has reached its aim which is to inform and persuade parents but, the brochure itself has not because of some main and vital information it has not mentioned or even touched on.
