White Flight.

Learner Notes April 12th, 2004 White Flight Dateline NBC took a closer look at an issue, which haunts a Chicago suburb, and most likely other suburbs across America as well, in its television program "White Flight." The startling problem concerned the movement of white families away from their suburban neighborhoods as black families began to move in. The families that were moving out all expressed the same fears, violence, crime, a decrease in property values, and a decrease in the quality of education in the schools due to the black families relocation. These concerns were mostly based upon conversations between white families in the neighborhood and got to the point of outrageous and ridiculous stories of terrible crime, the formation of gangs, the devaluing of their property and the lack of quality education in their schools. The lack of factual knowledge about their concerns lends itself to the spreading of rumors created by their stigmas regarding African-Americans today. The most prevalent concern was the safety of their children. Most families believed that their children would be directly hurt by the integration of their neighborhood. They were most concerned with their children being 'caught up' in gang activity or becoming the victims of crime. This idea was made obviously absurd through a walk of the neighborhood where families were outdoors, gardening,

Does the English education system tend to promote inequalities rather than opportunity for all and, if so how?

Does the English education system tend to promote inequalities rather than opportunity for all and, if so how? Inequalities within the education system have been of prime concern to many educational sociologists who believe that these discriminations still fester away at the British schooling system. Although, Britain introduced the 1944 Education Act and comprehensive schools, in order to provide equality of opportunity, it is still evident that matters of class, gender and ethnicity continue to be the focus of inequalities and raises the question as to whether schools continue to contribute to these social differences. According to theories of Marx and Weber, class is viewed in relation to ownership, or lack of ownership, of capital and the means of production. Initially, in the case of education, instead of developing a unified system of state schooling, a tripartite secondary system was proposed, that is, grammar, central/technical and secondary modern school. By the 1950's and 1960's, inequalities in the social distribution of education was apparent and despite further shifts towards a more egalitarian schooling, class barriers remained intact, especially at the level of higher education with the proportion of working class children entering universities actually decreasing. Recently, in an attempt to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, the Education

Managing behaviours in the learning environment. We need to also take in to account the different environmental effects on adult learners as opposed to younger learners.

Adrian Hart Clarida Unit 9 CTTLS Level 4 Managing behaviours in the learning environment. It is often assumed that teachers are only challenged by younger students aged 14 - 19, but as Wallace (2002) points out, over one third of teachers who responded to a question on 'challenging behaviour' felt they had either experienced or observed difficult or negative behaviour from adult learners. Younger students will have been used to an educational culture where their behaviour is challenged or rules would be issued and therefore would be more ready to accept this within a college environment. As Wallace (2002) quite clearly states, we as a teacher may be less comfortable to admonish or correct an older students as also an adult learner may find this far more difficult to accept. We need to also take in to account the different environmental effects on adult learners as opposed to younger learners. Adults are affected far more by family and financial responsibilities, often having to balance fulltime jobs whilst studying. Teaching a group of 16 - 19 year old students Music Technology, we have very rarely had to deal with disruptive behaviour other than students talking out of turn or creating the odd double entendre on a suggestive word within a presentation. At what point can we as teachers decide if the behaviour is disruptive? Wallace (2002) argues that it is when the

Breaking the Cycle of Mediocrity and Despair.

Candice Ann C. Santos Breaking the Cycle of Mediocrity and Despair What is this cycle of mediocrity and despair? It is simply that those who aspire and become teachers come from the ranks of the poor and the inadequately trained. They are poorly schooled, without adequate background and means to enter the higher paying professions. They finish their basic education without adequate facilities, books, school supplies, most pathetically, they come under the care of teachers with elementary competencies in reading, writing, computing, and even speaking. Some high school teachers are assigned to teach physics, chemistry, algebra when they are not even well equipped to teach lower grade math and science classes. And so the poorly trained poor high school graduates to poor teacher-training institutions to be able to teach the poor. And the cycle continues on and on. Of course, the students of the elite, exclusive schools are a thousand times luckier. They are, however, a chosen few compared to the millions in public and private schools who suffer from education from which many of those in the lower 50% will emerge the teachers of tomorrow. What are some strategic solutions? First, there should be a law requiring the honor graduates of all college courses and board top-notchers in all professional examinations to TEACH for at least two years in any public or private school.

Should school uniforms be made compulsory?

Should school uniforms be made compulsory? Date: 24/07/02 Name: Keyan Khalid Teacher: Liz Introduction This is an essay on the matter whether school uniform should be compulsory or not. We will discuss the advantages, disadvantages and I will write my own conclusion Contents . Advantages of school uniform 2. Disadvantages of school uniform 3. Compromises 4. My personal conclusion Advantages The advantages to wearing school uniform are good arguments. The first is you would be able to represent the school in public, giving the school a good name and also encouraging students to behave while outside school premises. The second is to easily be identified by the public, this would be ideal if a student were lost and unable to find there way home. The third is the practical implications it presents, by this I mean it allows students to think about their homework and revision without having to spend an hour deciding what shirt to match with which trousers etc, it also allows students to get dressed easily and quickly which also improves their punctuality. The fourth is equality among the school members this is also the best argument because all students are equal fashion wise. Which reduces the chance of being socially castaway, in simple terms this stops both physical and verbal bullying. Disadvantages The first disadvantage is how expensive the uniform is their

Writer's Notebook

WRITERS NOTEBOOK "Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is hurtful"-Benjamin Franklin Saddam Hussein-A man that killed thousands of innocent people, a man that tortured and imprisoned thousands of his own people, a man that ruled through terror and intimidation, a man who is a murderer and a thief, a man who was willing to kill anyone that tried to get in his way, and the man that showed no sorrow or remorse after learning of his sons death. If Saddam Hussein was in Dante's Inferno, then he definitely would have been in deepest pit in hell. Dante would have put him in circle 7, which was about violent people. In Dante's Inferno, the circle 7 has three rings/categories-violence against Neighbors, violence against Self, and violence against God. Hussein definitely fits in the two of the three rings. The first ring which is violence against neighbors includes murderers and robbers. Hussein, without a doubt, fits in here very well. Hussein suits this circle because he was a killer of mass proportions, or as Dante would've called him a 'satan himself in disguise.' He committed genocide against his own people. He is the reason that "his" country has suffered the way it did for so long. He is a murderer and a thief, who was willing to kill anyone that tried to get in his way. He used poison gas many years ago to kill Kurds in Iraq. He was

Strategies for combating Cognitive Differences in the Class-room

Strategies for combating Cognitive Differences in the Class-room. Even if you are a teacher in a general education classroom, you will probably find one or more students with specific or general cognitive difficulties in your classroom. List five strategies that may be useful as you work with such students. For each one, describe in specific and concrete terms what you might do, and identify the kinds of special needs your strategy will address. Firstly, I would promote success on academic tasks. Many students with learning disabilities or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder perform poorly on academic tasks and assignments. They may lack some of the basic concepts and skills that their non-disabled peers have already acquired and so need individualized instruction and practice to fill in the gaps. Many theorists suggest that one or another form of direct instruction, whereby students are specifically taught the things they need to learn, is the most effective approach. Other theorists recumbent that awe also teach students specific ways of thinking about classroom tasks, for example, I would teach students specific ways of thinking about classroom tasks. For example, when I would teach students how to write stories or essays, I would give them extensive instruction and practice in each phase of the writing process: planning, drafting, editing, and revising.

MIS case study

MIS Case Study 'Eye to Eye' and 'Pupils in charge of their own learning'. There are many ways in which management information systems (MIS) can help different users in schools. The way it can help all types of teachers and students in schools is that they can monitor and analyse the performance of each and every student individually, this can improve the standards of teaching. It can help systemise the process of assessing children's learning by capturing the information and storing it. Three levels of analyses are used for the data. They are: * Individual student level * Group level * level of overall school accountability At the individual student level, students and teachers can analyse the learning patterns together, identifying areas of strength and those where support and guidance are needed. At the group level departmental heads and subject leaders can ensure the school meets the collective needs of a group or class. That translates into the school's decisions about designing and planning the curriculum and allocating time and resources. At the level of overall school accountability the senior management team and governors can ensure the school is identifying its strengths and weaknesses. Doing this can improve results in exams and can also have an effect socially as well as academically. It can also make the relationship between teachers and pupils

Chocolate War by Robert Cormier.

A Truly Great Teenage Style Novel What would it be like if you lived in a cage? With no freedom, no right to chose or make decisions. Other people tell you what to do when, where and how, but not why. This is the life fourteen-year-old Jerry Renault lives in as told in a book called Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. The Chocolate War takes place in a Catholic college named Trinity in New England. At Trinity, teachers don't rule the school. A group of students who are called The Vigils have control over the whole school. The Vigils are like a mini "mafia" in Trinity. The president is Carter but of the head of The Vigils was The Assigner, Archie Costello who was always one step ahead of everyone. The secretary, the one who sometimes hate but other times admired Archie was Obie. Brother Leon, a teacher indirectly asked The Vigils to help the school raise funds, and that's the reason why the school existence always depended on The Vigils. The assigner of the group, Archie Castello, gives out assignments to anyone he feels like. These "Assignments" are nothing but pranks The Vigils play on anyone they want. Whenever Archie assigns someone, he has to draw a marble from "The Black Box". The box contains 6 marbles, 5 white and 1 black. If Archie draws a white marble, the assignment stands. Archie's worst nightmare is if he draws a black one. If this happens, Archie himself would
