If all these legislation aren’t followed the individual can face prison as it is negligent and companies can be fined or even closed down.
2. The specific regulations and safe working regulations and procedures which apply to my work activities are electricity at work regulation 1989, Provision and use of work equipment regulation 2002. PPE, cosh and manual handling operations 1992. These regulations were followed when it came to my work activities. For example Cosh was used when I was using the pillar drill and the cutting fluid is applied. The cutting fluid would have been tested to make sure it was safe to use and was not hazardous to health. Another example is PPE as there is a potential danger when carrying out activities so I wore PPE this would be minimise the risk of injury.
3. All hazardous material all must carry warning signs which is labelled on the product they come into seven categories:
Toxic – Can cause poisoning by ingestion, inhalation or absorption through tissue.
Corrosive – Can cause corrosive damage to skin, eyes and the respiratory system.
Harmful irritant - Can produce harmful effects to eyes and skin although not actually toxic or corrosive.
Highly flammable – Will catch fire easily. May be commonly used organic chemical, such as acetone or gasoline.
Explosive – Many substances will explode in the right conditions, including flour, starch, coal dust, gases.
Oxidising - Provides an oxygen supply which can cause a potential explosion or fire. Oxidising substances include nitric acid, peroxides and chlorates
Radioactive - Emits ionising radiation
4. All the relevant health and safety information was given by our instructor showing us the correct procedures to use the machines and what PPE was needed also there would be safety signs throughout the workshop. There is also a health and safety board outside the workshop which says relevant information such as who the first aider in the building is and where the first aid box is located.
5. There are numerous hazards in the workplace which can cause harm these can be from many things such as not using machinery correctly or safely, this can cause serious accidents. Another hazard could be not putting away work tools this can not only cause incidents to yourself but to others around you.
6. As it was my responsibility for dealing with hazards I would always try to reduce the risks in the workplace. These were done by writing up a risk assessment before any activity and highlight any hazards and try and find away to reduce these hazards. Also just hazard spotting in general for example if I was about to use a tool or equipment but I notice its damaged I would report it and make sure no one else would use it.
7. During my activities there would be a number of risks associated with my working environment such as the use of tools, equipment, oils and chemicals. In order to work effectively and safely I would have to follow the working practice and procedures. This would relate to reporting any faulty equipment or tools or any spillages of oils and other chemicals.
9. Control measures are put into place to try and reduce the risk of injury to a hazard. Some control measures that I used was the use of PPE such as eye protection as this protects my eyes. Another control measure is the guard on the pillar drill to which is used to prevent swarf from fling out.
10. The first aid procedure that exists is to have a trained first aider in the building and to have access to the first aid box also a report of the incident must be carried out and recorded in the accident book. If they need more then first aid they would be sent to the hospital.
11. Dangerous occurrences and hazardous malfunctions should always be reported even if no injury happened. It is important to record these because it can eliminate future injuries. One example of a dangerous occurrence is noticing the guard on a machine is broken, by reporting this it stops anyone from using this machine and preventing an injury from taking place.
12. The procedure in relation to sounding the fire alarm would happen if you see sign of smoke or fire then you would activate the alarm and report to the assembly point which such be located outside with a sign, it is there where you can do a register and make sure everyone is out the building.
13. The company would have to work inline with the fire regulations, this regulation would make sure that procedures are put into place in the event of a fire. so a fire risk assessment must be carried out and reviewed. All flammable equipment must be stored out the way also fire drills must be carried out on a monthly basis. You should never tackle a fire unless you have been trained to do so.
14. The personal protective equipment and protective equipment that was available when do my activity was wearing steel toe caps which protected my feet from falling objects, overalls which protect my skin and clothes from oils and other chemicals. Eye protection was also worn which protected my eyes from hazards such as flying swarf.
15. It’s important to keep yourself as hygienic as possible even though this can be hard given the nature of the activities carried out. To ensure good hygiene always wash your hands before contact with food, keep overalls as clean as possible. Also make a habit to use barrier cream before a job this will make it easier to remove any dirt and grease from your hands and will prevent dermatitis.
16. Its important to work in a responsible manner in a working environment and you have a duty of care to act sensibly therefore such behaviour as shouting, joking around, running and just messing about cant be tolerated inside the working environment as this behaviour can become dangerous and unproductive. It also worth mentioning that you should always use the correct tool for the job and never use damaged tools or equipment.
17. The manual handling operations regulations lay down the requirements for moving loads by hand. This could be pushing or pulling and the following control measure are put into place such as using lifting aids such as a sack trolley for example. Other control measures are completing a risk assemesnt which would focus on the task, load, working environment and individual capability. These factors must be taken into account when carrying out manual handling operations.
18. It’s important to leave your work area safe and clean as this will avoid hazards if for an example a fire alarm went off there would be less objects in your way when exiting the premises and it will keep it safe for you and other people.
19. The time to act on your own initiative is if you have the relevant knowledge and experience you should ask for help if you are unsure on anything.
20. I would report to my instructors in the event of a problem that I could not solve.
