On the other hand, this archetype is also presented in Anne Perry's novel, Defend and Betray. The protagonist in this novel is Detective William Monk and he is set on a case to figure who had murdered the well known general. The suspects in this matter stood out to be the General's wife, Alexandra Carylon or his daughter, Sabella Pole. In the middle of the novel, it was Alexandra who had admitted to killing the general and William Monk started his quest by saying “ Please tell me everything about your husbands death, Mrs Carylon, I have never given up on a case before and for yours, I will not.” (Perry 60). By this he promised Alexandra he will not give up on her or her case.
The second archetype presented in both of these novels is the temptations of evil. The temptations of evil are represented in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz by proving that Duddy would have done almost anything to get the money for the land. This included him going desperately out of his way in blacking mailing Jerry Dingleman into giving him money or he would go to the police about his smuggling heroin across the Canadian border. “ Give me the money or I will go to Cote” ( Richler 343). Duddy also proved himself to fall into the temptations of evil when he hired Virgil, an epileptic, to drive for him. Even though Duddy knew the risk he was running to let an unmedicated epileptic drive for him especially at night. Even after Virgil's accident where he had a seizure at the wheel broke his back and could never walk again, Duddy still went on hurting him even more. He finally finished when he stole all of Virgil's money “ Do you think I liked forging the check? Am i a thief?” (Richler 375), and went even deeper when he said he will give it all back. The kind of man Duddy was, proved that he would have done anything to get what he wanted.
In Defend and Betray, the temptations of evil are present in almost every chapter. The first temptation proved to be Alexandra giving herself up when she could have stayed silent and have been but through the trial. “ And now they are saying, that Alexandra had admitted to killing Thaddeus” ( Perry 20). This has proven to be a temptation of evil because if Alexandra had just kept her head down and let them think that it was an accident or a suicide then the trial and all the drama would have not taken place. A temptation Monk had is hes beginning to wonder whether or not his case is worth his reputation.
“ Oliver, I am not a man to give up my career or give up without a fight, but now I am seeing this case the same way you do. A thankless one. One that will destroy my reputation as an investigator if I keep pursuing or if I let it go.” (Perry 218)
This shows that the temptation that Monk was going through was going back on his word to Alexandra and give up on her case. All of these can be related to the temptations of evil because they both are setbacks that the protagonist has to get through to finish their quest.
The third and final archetype that can be recognized in these novels are Obstacles. The obstacles that appear in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz are ones that many people have to go through in there own lives. First is Duddy's goal to keep up a successful business to earn money to get the land. He tries to earn money in a few unsuccessful ways. First, he tried to talk to the Boy Wonder to see if he can give him any money but that didn't work out in Duddy's favor. Next he started a company to repair broken pinball machines and finally with his production agency, Dudley Kane Enterprises. Duddy never seemed to have much luck with starting his own business. Another obstacle that Duddy had to go through was keeping in touch with his family and with Yvette. After he asked Yvette to marry him and Yvette said no, and brought up the facts on Virgil on how he was going to need constant care. She then told him “ I'll speak to the notary. The deeds cane be transferred to you father's name until you come of age.” (Richler 95) This made Duddy realize that he needed Yvette to help in run his business. He also started to loose touch with his family and at his Uncle Benjy's funeral, with business going bad, he realized he needed his family to stay there. An attempt to get back in touch with his brother he says to him at his their mothers grave, “ We're supposed to come here once a year aren't we? This year let's try. We could come together” ( 300). This shows Duddy was at least making an attempt to get back in touch with his brother and pass through at least on of the obstacles.
On the other hand, obstacles that the protagonist, Monk, had to get through were much more defiant and was literally a life and death situation. His first obstacle was the stubbornness that Alexandra Carylon and Fenton Pole put up. First, was Alexandra who refused to give any detail's regarding her husbands death. “ there is only one truth that matter Mr Monk, and that is that i killed my husband. There is no other truth hey care about. Please don't pretend otherwise” (Perry 238). She was constantly saying that her was her fault and she should be the one put to death. Monk who was looking for a different motive, disagrees and needed Alexandra's full co-operation, which she was not giving and that was one of the obstacles that Monk was put up against. In Fenton's case, he refused to let his wife, Sabella, give any information regarding her fathers death or her mothers arrest. Even though she had information that would greatly help both Monk and Alexandra, he refused to let her give it. “ As you can see Mr Monk, my wife is in a very distressed state. It will be perfectly clear to you that nothing she says can be of any use to Mrs Carylon” (96). By saying his wife was sick and everything she said was a lie, proved to be another egoistical in the novel. Another obstacle in Defend and Betray is the race against time. Time between Alexandra's death and the trial was running out and still they did not have a strong enough case to prove Alexandra's innocence.
In conclusion, the novels The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Defend and Betray can be compared through the archetypes, the quest of the protagonist, by Duddy's inability to hold a successful business and to get enough enough to by the land, and through finding out his is real friends are. Also by William Monk's quest to find out who killed the General and why. Another archetype was the temptations of evil by Duddy's desire to do whatever he wanted to get the money even though it was illegal and the biggest act of evil in the book, his stealing the money from an epileptic who he thought would was a friend. In Defend and Betray it was the secret that made Alexandra kill her husband and Monks desire to give up on the case even though he had promised Alexandra he wouldn't. The third and final archetype was obstacles. This was Duddy's obstacle to get enough try to keep a successful business running and to stay in touch with his family and Yvette. In Defend and Betray it was Monks obstacle against Alexandra's and Fenton's stubbornness and the race against time before Alexandra's trial and death. These two novels are idealistic representations of the three archetypes and they both summarize the novels to an extent.
