In our society, the church plays a big role in our beliefs and the way we think. It also has a great impact when it comes to law making. Some believe abortion is wrong because they believe that it is blatant murder of a life. Many of the propagators of this idea are usually associated with the belief system. They believe that every human has the right to life. The church says that fetus is considered human the very instance that it is conceived. However, the Bible never actually mentions the term abortion or that it is wrong in any way. So, we shouldn’t follow the church's teachings when it isn't defined or presented within the teachings. Another controversy is that if you read Genesis 2:7 it states, "The Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became living soul”. This taken literally means that a fetus is not a person, thus further contradicting the belief system of so many anti-abortionists.
The fetus can not feel pain and does not have any emotions or thoughts, so how can it be considered a human? This means that the entire argument against women that they’re killing humans by having an abortion is ridiculous and can be dropped because it is untrue. Another important reason is that if the mother has problems of her own that may cause the death of the child, herself, or of both them, then that is enough of a reason why abortions should not be banned. The woman could have an abortion early on and could avoid these life threatening problems.
Continuing on with the pro-abortion argument, what if a woman is raped and a baby conceived? Shouldn’t the woman be allowed to have a safe and legal abortion without any hassles from the law or church? I definitely think so and believe that it is morally right for the woman in this case to have an abortion.
In conclusion, abortion will always be a controversial issue because of its complex and delicate views. It will probably be left unsolved because of the many strong arguments for and against abortion. However, I am definitely pro abortion and pro choice. I firmly believe women should have the right to choose and exercise their options. And it is not fair for the church to be so adamant to stop women from having abortions through their belief system. Let’s not forget that the belief system the church instills on the common folk was been created a long time ago in an era when women had very little or no rights at all. So to continue this suppression of women’s rights in the modern world makes very little sense and should be changed.
