Almost a Woman, Esmeralda Santiago's sequel to her moving and powerful memoir When I was Puerto Rican, brings to life her experiences as she grows up in Brooklyn

Almost a Woman English Project I by Esmeralda Santiago Almost a Woman, Esmeralda Santiago's sequel to her moving and powerful memoir When I was Puerto Rican, brings to life her experiences as she grows up in Brooklyn. This coming-of-age memoir is about her transition from an adolescent Puerto Rican immigrant attending junior high school and Performing Arts High School to a young woman in her 20s. At age thirteen, she came to America with her mother and siblings in 1961, "in search of medical care for my youngest brother, Raymond, whose toes were nearly severed by a bicycle chain when he was four" (page 3). The fact that they were constantly moving in and out of apartments/houses kept Esmeralda and her family from getting attached to possessions, or even to friends. Although Esmeralda learned not to put value to possessions, she puts value to the good things that come to her. "When it hurt, I cried silent tears. And when good things came my way, I accepted them gratefully but quietly, afraid that enjoying them too much would make them vanish like a drop of water into a desert" (page 89). Esmeralda's mother, Mami, old-fashioned and lived by the Puerto Rican traditions, kept her 10 children on a short, strict leash. She always warned her kids that something bad could happen to them. She said her two nieces, Alma and Corazón, were Americanized. "The way she

What only I can explain…

What only I can explain... I'm lying on my bed in the position in which the cell's previous occupiers now lie six feet under, in the cemetery three hundred yards to the north. I stare at the tattooed walls, my body riveted with boredom, my solemn face not moving as my mind works faster than it ever has. Out of the blue washed walls and dirty scrawls, leaps forth the vivid images that have disturbed and perverted my mind... 'He's stood there in front of me, his sweaty breath smothering my face, his grip on my left arm, our sweat intermingling on my bruised forearm. His hold on my throat never ceasing as he drives his thumb ever deeper into my throat. My brain clears, the key to it, the rubber grip now clasped tightly in my right hand behind my foe's back. Faster than my mind, I draw the implement that slept, sheathed in the drenched trouser back, and brought it around to my front. The words of 'Jerusalem' start drifting through my now relentless mind, I see no other option, my adrenaline pumped body now set into the killer instinct, the power of my once savage ancestors bursting through me forcing my arm to surge forward in an unstoppable thrust. My movement only stopping as the hilt blocked my path straight through his body, the black bulge at the forefront of the handle now resting in the groin of its new home.' I blink and for a split-second my eyes strike reality again,

Lied I was only 17 when we met. I was still young and innocent. He was the kind of guy that I had always wanted - so caring, gentle, sweet, understanding, and everything. He was my first boyfriend. He promised he would give me everything I wanted and all I needed to do was to love and listen to all his needs. I thought that wasn't that difficult to do because I thought, at that time, I loved him. He promised to be with me till the rest of my life and would never hurt me. Hurting me was the last thing on his mind. He said he loved me with all his heart! He made me believe I was very lucky to have him! At first, things were fine between us. We were so into each other. I thought I really had found the man of my life. All of my friends also thought he was the one for me. Everybody was happy for me. He was all I could think about - every day and night. Gradually, things started to turn bad. He began to tell me what to do and what not to do. I let him the first few times because I believed in 'giving in'. Then, things started to get a little out of control. He didn't let me go to work, go out with my cousins and friends, talk to my friends on the phone, etc. I still didn't see what was wrong because I was so in love. He made me believe that he cared. He said he didn't want me to get into an accident or some other troubles when I was on my way to meet my cousins or friends. I

In describing the history of the English Language, two kinds of evidence are used: the linguistic history (internal evidence) and the non-linguistic history (external evidence). Use examples to discuss the role of these two kinds of evidence in the develo

Part One - Explain the meaning of the following terms, using examples from the U211 materials and any relevant examples of your own. Inflection is the process of changing a word so that it denotes a specific grammatical function. This is normally the ending of words, and this is used to express a tense or mood such as the past tense. An example of this can be found in the story of Caedmon from Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People. The use of 'sing' is changed by the word ending 'an' to create a new word 'singan', this is used to indicate the preposition 'to'. This changes the meaning of the word from something that is being named, the act singing to identifying that Caedmon is unable to create the act being described. Inflections can be found in modern English to describe current and past tenses, i.e., walking (present tense), walked (past tense). English Planning is the process of controlling the use of a language so that it is the main national language for a country using government policy. The standardising process has four stages to it, Selection, Elaboration, codification and Implementation. The selection of a language is required to form a base for the standardisation, an accepted norm that everyone could use. The variety of language that was selected was normally from those social circles that were deemed influential or powerful. The process of

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both the Prescriptive and Descriptive approaches to language. How has the recent arrival of the Corpus affected this debate. Introduction Language is a tool of communication and communication gives people an opportunity to understand each other. However, language constantly changes. At some moments it is difficult to understand someone who uses words, terms or phrases that you have never heard before. Especially difficult it becomes if that person comes from other from yours region or country and uses lexical units that are not common at your region. Changes of the language are rapid and dynamic. They occur constantly and in great numbers and variations. That is why dictionaries and language manuals need periodical updates. This is supposed to help in classifying and reflecting all the changes that have occurred in a certain period of time. Nowadays this necessity of updating is becoming even more significant. This happens because new technologies, concepts, ideas, and, consequently, new words and styles of communication shape themselves within the society and replace older ones. Sciences and industries develop new technologies and concepts daily. Hence, they need to be and are being reflected in our everyday language, accepted in our everyday life. Some words change their meaning, some get out of use, some get new meanings which

A Single Female's Comfort.

A Single Female's Comfort But... I do want friends who I can sit and talk with every other day. I have my sister but we're like day and night. There are times when I want my phone to ring knowing it's one of my friends calling to invite me out. This Friday night seems like a nice opportunity to go to a house party, a bar-restaurant, or nightclub, maybe. Coincidentally the phone rang. It was a cool spring evening and I hadn't made any plans, which I seem to never do since I don't have my own transportation. If I'm ever out it's because one of my friends decided I needed to hang out with them. "Hello?" I could hear my sister answering the phone from her bedroom while I was lying on the couch -- my favorite place in the apartment. So smooth and comforting. Broken in by all the backsides, arms and legs, stinky feet even, which we happen to invite into the comfort of our loving home away from home. "Yeah. Hold on." The scrambling of her moving from the bed to the door made a crumbing noise like plastic being removed from a new piece of furniture. The bedroom door flung open. "Telephone." She handed me the phone with its extended cord dragging along the carpet like a snake slithering through grass. "Let me know when you're off the line because I'm waiting for a phone call." "Sure." I agreed. She then returned to her bedroom, closing the door behind her. Who could this be

Essay Title: Outline one aspect of psychological development, which is often associated with deviant behaviour during adolescence. How might this problem be addressed? "Adolescence is a period of searching. It is a slow, often painful process of seeking and discovering, of acceptance and rejection. It is primarily a process of growth newness, and experiencing. In the adolescent' s search to become what he feels is right for his destiny, he experiences many forces of his environment-some of which he uses and some of which use him. ( Dreyful, 1976, p.118 ) Deviant behaviour during ad?lescence is very likely to occur since ad?lescents are not always able to cope with the rapid and dramatic changes that happen to them. One prevalent form of deviancy is drug use. Drug use is a form of slavery to which adolescents willingly and inconsiderately submit. This horrifying danger of "slow death " invades and ruins the bodies and souls of our youth from which our society expects a lot. The psychological, emotional and physical problems that adolescents have to face in the end are enormous. A lot of research has been done in order to understand how adolescents think and why they are driven to drugs. There are several reasons for this deviancy. Peer pressure is a reason why adolescents use drugs. "Pressures for conformity to peers increase for most adolescents as they move from

Living a Healthier Lifestyle.

Living a Healthier Lifestyle By Gracie Kris E. Choy of 10 - Newton Nowadays, when people are asked if they live a healthy lifestyle, most of them would answer "No." Why? Because living in this chaotic world needs money in order to survive and meet one's needs. Parents tend to forget to exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet and sleep at least eight hours a day because of their office work. The children, on the other hand, tend to forget about these things because of the heavy schoolwork that they bring home everyday. You may ask, "What is the effect of living a healthier lifestyle?" Well, based on my experience last summer, regular exercise, proper diet, and an eight-hour sleep everyday can make a person feel young and light. Exercising regularly can make a person feel better in a way that it can make you feel lighter. You can do your task easily. You wouldn't feel so bloated when doing a certain task, because exercise can make your bones and ligaments more stretchable. Actually, the exercise that I am talking about is not the "going-to-the-gym" thing. Oh, I am sure it's really a hassle to go to the gym everyday. Maybe thrice a week will do, but I am talking about the 15-minute stretching and a 30-minute jogging around your block. Of course, if you want to attain a certain figure, you also need to eat a well-balanced diet. Take out all your fruits and

It was the night of the year that few children can sleep.

It was the night of the year that few children can sleep. The night when everyone hopes that snow will fall and they will wake up to a garden of glistening diamonds grown by the morning sun. It was Christmas Eve. As many had hoped, snow was falling. It slowly covered the houses and streets in a thick blanket. The moon shone her silver light down on the white world, and but for one, there was nobody to view the kind of beauty that things such as love and dreams are made of. The only one there to see the spectacle was a small boy of five, or six years. This little boy possessed a beauty not of this earth, a beauty that surpassed even all that surrounded him. His curly blond hair had never seen a blade, and it framed a face that belonged to a cherub of a painting of old. His eyes were of the brightest, clearest blue, and they sparkled like pools of water born on the earth's first day. His skin was as pink and soft as a newborn child's. It was a beauty born in the dreams of dead poets, and the few lucky enough to see it with their own eyes would remember it as long as they lived. On this night of happiness and anticipation, the little boy wandered sad and alone through a painting so beautiful no one could ever paint it. The glistening tears frozen to his cheeks told a story, but it is one that is lost to us. No one will ever know why the boy was alone, and there was no one
