About a Boy

About a Boy By Matt Lever It seamed like he was the only one who truly understood himself, He was the black sheep in a flock of white "better than him" sheep. A well and true out cast. This he is me, I've lived in this scabby little town all my life and had limited amounts of friendship, is this because of my appearance, the things I like, or just because I'm relatively intelligent, unlike most of these other half wits that attend my school. The use of the word sheep above also has another meaning, to me anyway, you come to our school and everyone wears the same clothes and do the same thing...E.g. people have Nike shoes and Addidas jogging bottoms, just kappa slappas in general clothing terms. All of there hair looks like a cow has just walked up to them and licked there face, "its called a quiff, get with the times man" is there excuse. And they all listen to club music. Anyway the point I'm trying to make is that everyone is afraid to be different...except from me. Which is a good thing for them, they can show off to their girlfriends (all similar as well) beating and poking fun at the weak, different kid. This is why this morning, like all, I lay in my bed hoping some sort of angel or what not will whisk me away to "a better place". Ha that could be anywhere the way I'm feeling now. It doesn't and I've decided that I've waited long enough so I jump

Compare and contrast Functionalist and Marxist

Compare and contrast Functionalist and Marxist explanations of society Jawad Ahmed, 27th September 2008 "Functionalism is a theoretical perspective based on the notion that social events can best be explained in terms of the functions they perform-that is, the contributions they make to the continuity of a society- and on a view of society as a complex system whose various parts work in a relationship to each other in a way that needs to be understood" Functionalists emphasise the importance of Value Consensus in society and do not recognise that conflict may occur. If conflict does occur they argue it can be rectified as society improves and evolves. They accept that conflict can arise but is insignificant compared the general need for consensus and stability, (the greater good) Moral consensus is vital for maintaining order and stability in the belief that shared values will lead to this with the family playing a vital role on issues such as stability of personality and socialization Ceremonies and rituals are important cornerstones of functionalist society. Prime examples are The Church, Monarch and government which are institutions that have become interdependent on one another and form the very DNA of functionalism. According to Durkheim, a functionalist society is metaphorically compared to the human body,"....like a body consisting of various specialized parts;

What conclusions regarding morality in advertising can be drawn from the Benetton advertising campaign of the 1980's and early 90's?

What conclusions regarding morality in advertising can be drawn from the Benetton advertising campaign of the 1980's and early 90's? In the 1980's an increase in the amount of money, which went into an advertisement, was increasing dramatically, Campaigns were being increased and brands recognised. Companies were researching and understanding what exactly people wanted and what appealed. This research boiled down to four main groups. Firstly the mainstreamers; people who needed security and who felt that something was missing in their lives. The aspirer; the person who liked all the good things in life. The succeeded; the person who had to be in control. And lastly the Reformer, who had self-fulfilment, and liked the whole picture. Benetton today has become one of the most well known clothing companies, but the majority of people know Benetton for its shocking advertising. The responsibility for this is mostly down to one man, by the name of Tuscani, who had partnered Benetton for 18yrs. "I am not here to sell pullovers, but to promote an image..." His work was highly controversial, and shocked and confused people. A few examples of his shocking campaigns are images from war such as the soldier's bloodstained uniform of a soldier, who had been killed in action. Another was a reality campaign, in which Tuscani used other people's traumatic and troubled lives. He simply

When I began to read Edmundson's article, I attempted to sense an overall theme that, for me would characterize the tone of his piece.

Rachel Asher Assignment #3 When I began to read Edmundson's article, I attempted to sense an overall theme that, for me would characterize the tone of his piece. I felt that if I found what was holding it together and the motivation behind it, then I would be able to analyze the piece with respect to that theme. I read through the article once quickly and I was struck by how resentful the author sounded. So, I read through it again and highlighted certain areas which I thought illustrated that resent. By the end, I had highlighted about 3/4 of the document! The more I looked for examples the more I was struck by the fact that almost every sentence seemed to support my thesis. Feeling one-sided, I attempted to take a different stance in order to see things from another angle. However, I was so blinded at this point by the overwhelming antipathy in the article that I couldn't see anything else. It felt to me like looking at that optical illusion of the woman and the candle and how once you focus on one image, the other fades out of focus and you can never properly see it again. Since the author's resentment was all that I could see, I tried to form an argument that the whole essay was built upon that hate and attempted to narrow my highlighted material down to the best points that would support this premise. I attempted to be fair and to not take examples out of the

The Conflict in "A&P" by John Updike.

Rachel Ince Mrs. Hudler English 1302-14 9 February 2003 The Conflict in "A&P" by John Updike After reading John Updike's short story "A&P," one can easily see conflict interwoven throughout the story. Specifically, the main argument is between the two ideals of conformity and nonconformity. Furthermore, these ideals can be depicted by three smaller conflicts: the store and Sammy, the customers and the girls, and Lengel and the girls. To begin, the main setting, the store, embodies structure and conformity. After all, the store has rules, a manager, organization, and a way of being. For instance, the setting is located in a small town with very little change. The rules and norms that are set are held highly by the locals in this small community. This, in turn, explains the structure within the store and in the minds of the townspeople. Throughout Sammy's descriptions of the store, the reader feels a sense of dislike and nonconformity in his character. Sammy opposes the store's structure with his thoughts and perceptions leading up to quitting near the end of the story. For example, Sammy views his work area as a "slot": a small, confined place where he is stationed to stay put throughout his shift (14). Another conflict arose between the traditional customers and the girls. From the moment the girls enter the store "...in nothing but bathing suits," they came in with

Is human language the distinguishing feature of our species?

Human language is an integral part of being human and the major distinguishing feature of our species. Language uses a conventional system to express ideas that are only meaningful to those who understand the same system. An alphabet is an example of a system of arbitrary symbols. Language can be explained as having three different characteristics or principles. Firstly, language is a communication method. Secondly, it is a tool used to communicate symbolic meaning. Lastly, language is a rule-governed system of sounds and words. (CS212OC M1,L1, F, 2011) Human beings are the only known species that communicate in this form of language. Linguists, including Naom Chomsky, suggest that humans are born with a natural knowledge of language, which he refers to as the "language faculty." According to Chomsky, (1996) This "language faculty" is seen as a biological system in the brain that "has an initial state which is genetically determined, like. . . the kidney, the circulatory system, and so on" (p.13). Chomsky started this revolutionary idea that language is biological, and the existence of a "universal grammar". Other species are capable of using language or language like symbols, but it is humans who have the far superior language abilities. Civilization and human life have been able to thrive and evolve, thanks to our ability to communicate using various forms of language. Human

What exactly is success?

What exactly is success? I think everyone has their own definition and explanation of what it is. Especially in the new millenium people view success as how much money you have or how luxurious you are living. On the other hand Ralph Waldo Emerson's perception of success was based on enduring "the betrayal of false friends" and " to laugh often and much". His perception was less material. I agree more with Emerson because being successful. doesn't mean to have jewels and money. I think a successful existence in society is based more on happiness, being comfortable, and being able to make it through hard times. Being happy is one of the most important things in life. Without happiness, I don't think you can consider yourself successful. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy then it's really no good. For example, J Alfred Prufrock, from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", was a very successful man. He had a good job, but he wasn't happy with the way his life was going. He had no one to share it all with. There is no way to enjoy all the money and cars unless you're happy. If you're not happy then there is no need to keep going from day to day. Being comfortable with yourself and who you are, is also very important in being successful. Looking in the mirror is apart of a vast majority of people's lives. And if you are not comfortable

The Handkerchief.

The Handkerchief The Handkerchief is a story of a family that is torn apart by the mother's absence. The family was well before the mother's sister had become ill. She had no choice but to go because the sister had no one else to take care of her. The husband did not like the idea, but she said, "It's always like this. I've devoted eighteen years to you-without complaint, without demands. I'm not made out of stone. I have feelings too." As she speaks, she shows the reader their relationship was already becoming bitter. This was a doorway for her to leave even though she had children, she was not content. The mother was looking for happiness. When the mother arrived at the train station she had told the children that she would be back in one month. Before she had left she gave Benji, one of her sons a handkerchief to wipe away his tears. He loved the handkerchief because it had his mother's scent, and he could feel her in the presence. The one month arrived and she still did not arrive. Mary the eldest was taking care of the house and making sure she was getting the job done right. She had dinner everyday at five thirty and the house would be cleaner than ever. George who was older than Benji would just follow the directions of what Mary would tell him. Out of the three children Benji was the most affected by the mother's absence. He was hurting and angry that his mother was

Serial Killer gives homeless a roof over their head!

Serial Killer gives homeless a roof over their head! As a journalist I was set a task, that task was to gain insight into what it feels like to be homeless and living on the streets. When I started I thought it would be just tiring, dirty and boring but I got more than I bargained for. When I started out I met a young boy known as Link, he is only sixteen and already living on the streets. I saw him sitting in a café and I thought that he would be able to help me survive on this mission, teach me how to live on the streets. After a couple of months Link had started trust me and he thought we were in love! It was then the adventure started when Links friend, Ginger who had disappeared just before I turned up, was still missing and a man selling newspapers had said that he had seen Links friend being taken off by a man, we later learned called himself Shelter. This would not be too surprising but it was more mysterious because the newspaper guy had seen this bloke take a few homeless people and then they were seen no more. Link had found out where this guy lived, 9 Mornington Place. We sat outside his house for a couple of hours but when he came out he looked like a normal old man who looked like he only cared for his cat. I went but Link hung around for a while and somehow got invited into Shelter's house. Shelter explained to Link all about the ' Camden Horizontals' as
