Distribution Design Systems

        Essentially, Barilla is using a mixed warehouse strategy by distributing products to two centralized distribution centers (CDCs) and 18 Barilla owned warehouses.  From this point the CDCs are distributing Barilla products into the supermarkets’ distribution system known as Grande Distribuzione (GD) or the independent’s system known as Distribuzione Organizzata (DO).  The 18 Barilla owned depots are primarily shipping products to small independent grocers.  The distributor system and its processes pose a major threat to the successful implementation of the JITD program.  

From Barilla’s perspective, the fluctuations in demand are causing serious constraints with manufacturing and logistics.  Due to the time sensitivity of manufacturing the pastas, Barilla is not able to respond quickly enough to these fluctuations.  Maintaining a buffer inventory isn’t an optimal choice either because of the extreme costs involved with storing the excess inventory.  Even the views within Barilla are conflicting as the manufacturing personnel feel that the retailers or distributors should hold more inventory, yet others within Barilla feel that they are already carrying too much.  Barilla’s logistics manager explained that the retailers do not have the extra capacity to store inventory because the limited shelf space is already being filled with the introduction of new products.

From the distributors’ point of view, they too are feeling a need to add more inventory of items they already stocked and to add new items; however, they want to do so on their own terms.  One of the reasons why the distributors are resisting the JITD changes is because they fear losing control of managing the stock.  This is important to the distributors because of the reward system that is currently in place.  The distributors are making their order decisions by determining the best advantage of the trade promotions rather than focusing on the needs of the retailers.  The ...
