In Sparta, Menelaus, husband of Helen, treated Paris as a royal guest. However, when Menelaus left Sparta to go to a funeral, Paris abducted Helen (who perhaps went willingly) and also carried off much of Menelaus' wealth.
Menelaus, however, was outraged to find that Paris had taken Helen. Menelaus then called upon all of Helen's old suitors, as all of the suitors had made an oath long ago that they would all back Helen's husband to defend her honor. Therefore, the ten-year Trojan War began.
Nowadays, the screen has a preference for legendary tales. Finally, the Trojan War was made into a movie. The ten-year war was shortened a three-hour film. Without Gods in the modern the Trojan War, human beings become the sole main characters. And love absolutely involves in it.
The love between Paris and Helen is destined to a tragedy. Because of the trend of the Greek unity, their love is just a signal for a war but bears so many reproaches. People think Paris is selfish. To love a beauty ,Paris gave up the safty of his country. I think we call their feeling to each other “passion” better than “love”, because love ,this word is too much for them.
In the movie of Troy, love between Achilles and Briseis is like a farce. As a warrior in a war, it is likely to fall in love with the captive. Most people are moved by the scene that Achilles finds Briseis before the city is falling. But for me, I think it is unreasonable to pay too much attention to Achilles at the end of the movie. If their love is true love, maybe this kind of love seems superficial.
If there is true love in this movie, in my opinion, it must belong to Hector(the old brother of Paris). As a prince of Troy, the old son of Priam , a dependence of the family, he showed passion to his country, respect to his father, love to his young brother, children and wife. When his young brother was in trouble, although he was outraged, he still bore full responsibility with his courage. When he was needed by his father and his country , he went to battle to fight against the strong foe without hesitation. Before the city fell, he even has arranged his family to escape. His life is hard. He is never doomed to enjoy a happy life, because he is responsible for his country and his people. Compared with the glorious life of Hector , others’ lives seemed so slim. Compared with other love, Hector’s love seems more noble and more responsible.
When the Gods involve in this war, human beings are always loser. When the Gods quit, human nature comes out. Hector’s humanity is glory of human love.
After we have seen the movie of Troy, we can not help thinking about love. But different people hold different ideas about it. Francis Bacon said “the stage is more beholding to love ,than the life of man . For as to the stage ,love is ever matter of comedies, and now and than of tragedies; but in life it doth much mischief ”. Love always makes people out of control and makes people blind just like Paris, which brings so many tragedies to people’s life. Therefore , man ought to be ware of this passion, which loses not only other things, but themselves. When we fall in love with somebody ,we need to stop being lost ourselves and take responsibility like Hector.
