In this essay I am going to compare the representation of 3 characters from both films the characters I have chosen are: Andre (Gerard Depardieu), both daughters (Veronique – Marie Gillain and Nicole - Katherine Hegi) and the vamps (Christelle – Catherine Jacob and Diana – Faith Prince). I will be finding out how the characters are different in both films. The first character I am going to analyse is Andre Gerard Depardieu in the French film is much more serious when it comes to disciplining his daughter (Veronique0. I notice this because when she is misbehaving he will slap her where as in the American version Nicole has the upper hand. This is because American filmmakers like their films to be politically correct so that when they are released no one will find them offensive. The French however do not mind about things like that this is shown in a number of scenes in both films for example you will see Andre in the French film smoking where as he isn’t in the American version because this could be a form of advertising smoking. Back to Andre in the French film Andre is a lot slimmer as this goes better with his character but in the American version he is plumper. This is because he is made out to be more humours to look at than in the French film this is also seen by the cloves he wears which are bright coloured and he sometimes walks around with no shirt on. This all is to make the film more funny it is simple humour used to keep the laughter going. In both films Andre is the same kind of character in the way that he is kind and understanding. He is much more of a stronger character in the French film because he is French and every one around him is French. In the American version to make him look more stupid he is French but nearly everyone around him is American you never see a French person in this version of the film so he constantly gets confused, always makes people and himself feel embarrassed and awkward. This adds to the comedy of the American film. The daughters in both films are different in some ways and the same in others this is mainly because of the American version trying to be politically correct. For example in the American film Nicole will not let her farther sleep in the same bed as her this is because people may find this offensive. Nicole in the American film is very grown up for her screen age and is mainly interested in finding love she comes across as very arrogant and not very interested in getting to know her farther but as the film goes on you find that she would like to very much. Veronique in the French film differs from Nicole she doesn’t mind her farther sleeping with her this is because the French are not bothered about being politically correct. In the French film Veronique is around the same age as Nicole and is also interested in love but is more interested in getting to know her farther Andre. Both daughters try to get there farther together with a woman who we call the vamps. The vamps are the characters that are the characters that are out for something in this case a man. In the American file the vamp that is called Diana (Faith Prince) is very up front and fiery you can notice by her cloves alone she wears red and has short red hair which shows she is independent but the way she acts shows that she would like a man or wants a man. When Nicole first introduces Diana to Andre she starts off by asking if he has a wife/girlfriend and when Andre says yes but in Paris she says oh Paris so lovely and so far away which says to us that she is after him and doesn’t care that he has a girlfriend. The French vamp Christelle (Catherine Jacob) is much more discreet about her wants she seems to want to be friendly with Andre but they get closer but Andre in this film also has a girlfriend and that vamp is much nicer about by backing off and staying friends.
