Comparison between the ‘Gladiator’ Trailer and the Poster

The poster for the film Gladiator is a form of still media. This poster has been designed to draw people’s interest to watching the film. I believe that they have used some very effective techniques which in my opinion work very well together in the poster.

The words in the caption ‘A hero will rise’ are all affirmative. I think the word ‘hero’ is very effective because when you read the word ‘hero’ you visualise a person who is admired for doing something very brave or great in the film. The word ‘will’ is effective after ‘hero’ because this implies that a person inclines on doing something great or brave. They have also used ‘will’ before rise which also sets out that someone has a determination on rising. The caption makes the audience want to watch this film because in my opinion they would like to know “Where is this person going to rise to?” Also the words ‘will rise’ are monosyllabic this makes the caption more powerful as they are two short, sharp, and straightforward words.

Furthermore, the writing of the caption is bigger than everything else on the poster. My speculation on this is that it is showing us, the audience, that it is the most important aspect of the poster, relating this to the rest of the information engaged via the poster. The font of the caption takes up half of the poster; this also shows that it might be the most important information, which is needed to analyse the important point of the film.

In my opinion, the colour scheme on the poster has been used on the font because they want to catch our eyes on the caption as it is the ‘story’ of the film. This also indicates that the hero will rise to the top to the caption. The cloudy golden sepia colour effect that is used indicates that the film will be optimistic as well as pessimistic. The positive links with the caption as the caption is also affirmative.

Additionally, on the poster, there is a picture of the gladiator, which is in the centre. This picture is in shadow from light to dark. My view on this is that the central image will rise from hell-the dark, sinister part of his life to heaven- the brighter, superior future. The caption is above the gladiator. My assumptions on this are that the gladiator will do what the caption says, he will rise from the shadow of hell. From the poster I presume that the gladiator is a hero.

Maximus (Russell Crowe) is on the poster. Also with all his armour on you will assume they are showing us that Russell Crowe is a gladiator. With his sword you will also assume that he has been fighting or he is going to fight to rise from hell to heaven as this what I imagine the colours show in the poster. Also with the gladiator in the centre it informs the audience who the main focus of the film is based around.

Besides the gladiator being the central image the smoke around him is also effective as it ...
