How Do The Opening Scenes Of Baz Luhrmans 'Romeo and Juliet' Attract and Maintain Audience Attention
For my GCSE media studies coursework I have been studying the film 'Romeo and juliet' directed by Baz Luhrman, written by William Shakespeare.
The aspects of the film that I have been studying are: The music, how the characters are introduced, the setting, the use of colour, the subtitles and how the story is told before the film starts. Although I have been studying six aspects of the film I have chosen to focus on just three. The three that I have chosen are: The music, the use of colour and the subtitles. I have chosen to concentrate on these aspects because I think that they have the greatest impact on the film.
For this coursework I have to answer the question 'How do the opening scenes of Baz Luhrmans Romeo and Juliet attract and maintain audience attention.' I am going to attempt to do this by discussing Luhrmans use of colour, subtitles and music.
Shakespeare's original 'Romeo and Juliet' would have been set in 1593 so it would have been very traditional and the costumes would have been suiltable for the time. There would have been no cars or guns and it wwould have been set in Verona, Italy. Luhrman has managed to modernize 'Romeo and Juliet' by moving the setting to Venice Beach, California. Luhrman has cleverly changed the name to Verona Beach for the purpose of the film. Luhrman has also swapped the use of swords for guns, and has brought in cars as the means of transport. Modernizing the film in this way has made the film easier for the audience to understand which would attract a lot af attention from people wanting to know what the film was like.
I think that Shakespeare would have enjoyed Luhrmans adaptation of his classic because Shakespeare was a rebel in his time. In his plays he discussed subjects such as love, murder, and scandal. These topics were very much taboo in the 16th century and were not often talked about.
