Brief

I have been studying Film and Broadcast Fiction and have been asked to create a fictional film and advertise it through posters and other merchandise such as CD soundtrack covers and DVD box covers.

I think that a poster campaign consisting of two teaser posters and one main, would be suitable for me to produce as I have knowledge of digital cameras. Although I have my own camcorder I feel a film trailer would be too much of a challenge for me.

I must have a detailed plan of the plot of my film to create the posters. This will help me to create the poster because I could use colours that represent elements which link with the genre of my film. I spent a long time thinking about the genre of my film and I finally decided on romantic comedy. I have an idea of what the stock characters and situations are like because I tend to watch this genre more than any other. I am also interested in this genre and would enjoy promoting the narrative image of the film through a set of posters.

I believe that teenage girls and young women would be the type of people who would watch romantic comedies because a typical romantic comedy is usually about everyday situations in love or situations teenage girls wish they could have. Therefore, my target audience is teenage girls and young women.

My film will be about a young woman in her mid-twenties who lives an ordinary life in New York. I feel this city would be best, as it’s big and noisy and would add to the tension of the film and would create an exciting mise-en-scene. The audience follow her life at home, work, with friends and family and her boyfriend. She loses her job and falls out with her mother all in the space of a day and to top it all off her boyfriend splits up with her. The audience become involved in her life and are able to identify with her experiences. I think this would be quite a challenge for me, as you have to create suspense and tension to keep the audience’s attention. They have to really like the plot to understand how she feels. Also, many women would have been through the same situations like losing a job or arguing with family members and would understand how she feels and sympathise with her.

My unique selling point (USP) will be the stars of the film. Many films sell themselves on the plot like, “Hulk” and the “Harry Potter” series. But, some films whose plot isn’t strong enough to catch the attention of some people are promoted on the basis of their characters. “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” for example, doesn’t have a particularly interesting plot but it has popular stars, which would attract people to see the film. From this I have decided that someone really famous that teenagers and young women like will star in my film; for example, ...
