On the other hand in The Krays, in the first five minutes the colour is black and white when the mother is having babies.
The predominant colour in Goodfellas is black because it is element because the colour says a lot about the genre.
The strongest colour in Pulp Fiction is probably red mixed with black; on the other hand in The Krays the colour in the beginning is black and white but as you watch the film becomes very colourful.
This conveys the genre and narrative in Goodfellas because the colour black symbolises death and there is death in the opening of the film when there is dead man in boot so the colour gives it away that it is a gangster genre.
In Pulp fiction there is natural light in the café so we as the audience would not know it is gangster genre until you hear the dialogue.
Strangely in The Krays in the first five minutes it is all black and white then it gets colourful but you would not know it is a gangster genre until twenty minutes later when the brothers start fighting, so it takes a while for you to actually to discover it is gangster genre.
The swan in The Krays has a dark shadow; this shows that there is something wrong with the innocence that there is. You are given a clue to the genre and narrative of the film when the mother has given birth to them. This is a very clever juxtaposition as the sheets are white which usually means pure and the brothers are born the blood might mean that the mother has given birth to devils and that they will evil into the world. The effect of this scene is to tell us about the narrative because it tries to show the audience that what has just been will fill anger and danger.
This has revealed that the colour in Pulp Fiction and The Krays are very similar because it doe not really tell us in first five minutes that the genre is going to be gangster.
Now I will explore how sound is used to establish the genre in these films first of all in Goodfellas the characters speak quietly and use foul language. This lets us, as viewers know it is gangster genre.
The bad language is very similar to Pulp Fiction and the way it starts off quiet so builds suspense.
At the start as the credits come up, the sound of was of cars driving past.
This parallel sound is used as it represents what we will see on the screen and that definitely sets the genre.
Contrapuntal music is also played. It is up beat and seeing as someone has just been brutally murdered, these sound juxtapositions to what we have seen on the screen.
Diagetic sound of the car boot attack adds realism like the sound in the café in Pulp Fiction.
Alternatively, in Pulp Fiction the dialogue helps the audience to understand the story, as it was in chronological order the dialogue plays a really big part in the film.
Phrases like Garcon Coffee are very important. At the end, it lets us in first five minutes of the film that the genre is gangster when the couple starts robbing the customers in the café and also when they start swearing. In the very beginning, the couple talk very quietly as they are planning an evil plot to rob customers. The dialogue becomes very sinister.
Diagetic sounds used in Pulp Fiction are the dialogue, cars, music in diner, coffee being poured, coffee stirred, smoke, exhaling, garcon coffee, loudest dialogue, other customers and laughing.
Non-diagetic used in Pulp Fiction is the music at the beginning and end.
However in The Krays equally use contrapuntal sound when the mother is talking about being a beautiful white swan. It starts off with a calm relaxing sound with the white swan flying in the sky. Diagetic sounds are used in The Krays as you hear the swan’s flapping its wings. For a gangster it is very unusual to hear that type of sound in a gangster genre so the sound does not really convey the genre until a really loud scream. This makes the audience think about the narrative because the swan represented her dreams and when she screams that ends the dream when she gives birth to the twins. This adds narrative and it also helps set the genre because giving birth to the twins destroy her dreams
The first five minutes of Pulp Fiction the camera and editing is very dramatic from beginning to end. At first there is a pro longed medium used through out the film, this very different to most gangster film. As you watch the film the editing becomes faster to convey the genre and narrative. Far shots are used often as the couple speak I think this type of method used makes you more involved as you watch it. The film also uses the shoulder shots to the character’s postures, this adds to the narrative as it shows their emotions. On the other hand the camera and editing does not convey genre but it does tell us about the narrative.
In Goodfellas there are two types of camera shots used in the beginning there is far shot used when Henry is telling the story this adds to the narrative and it makes you understand it more because you don’t see talking at first. It also what can kind of area Henry lives in a far shot is used when Henry is looking out the window, this helps set the narrative as you watch the film who is telling the story is revealed.
Whereas The Krays looks at a different angle when it comes to camera and editing. The beginning starts off with a white swan, there is hardly any editing only a plain medium shot, it stays like this for quite a long time camera angle only changes when you get a close up of the woman screaming. The camera and editing does not convey the genre and narrative so the genre and narrative is not established in the first five minutes of film using camera shots or editing.
In Pulp Fiction the props were in an American diner, this created a sense of realism there is no iconography implied that the genre was going to be gangster until pumpkin puts a gun onto the table. This is iconography is often used in a gangster film there are other iconography used such as crime, drugs, and weapons which in Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and The Krays have used at some point in their films.
Goodfellas and The Krays both use iconography to convey the genre and narrative. The iconography used in Goodfellas is a gun it helps us convey the narrative because you know someone is going to get killed.
To add more to the iconography in Goodfellas is their suits and jewellery this shows that they have money that describes the gangster status because being a gangster is about making money this hints the narrative.
The way they dress in black and white suits very conventional for gangster films this is quite different in Pulp Fiction and The Krays because in both films they dress more street in first scenes.
In The Krays the iconography used is the knife that Ronnie that always carries about and the loads of money that they get. This shows that are rich and that they demand respect this definitely tells us about the genre and narrative.
To conclude from the three films I have studied I can see that in the first five minutes of The Krays, Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas the genre are established by much use of cinematic techniques. The iconography in the films showing the guns, wealth, and costumes sets up the genre for the audience, it also show conventional gangster films are with the murders, crimes, and violence which occur in these three films. The dialogue in Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas also helps establish the narrative because it sets the scene of the story. The last thing that adds to establishing the genre and narrative in the first five minutes are the lighting and colours in the film. All three of these films have black and white titles which is a traditional thing in a gangster films, also the juxtaposition of the red blood and white sheets tells the audience a lot about the narrative it says a lot about what they are going to cause in The Krays.
