GUIDELINE FOR THE 'RESEARCH TASK'

STEP 1 Go to a library/ resource centre and research your nominated photographers/filmmaker’s who use the concept or technique of shadow in their work. The attached list of photographers will give you a starting point for your research. For example Christian Boltanski, William Kentridge, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Hitchcock,

Once you have found the image/video photocopy it twice (one to paste into this booklet and the other for your presentation-in the case of video find a video still or cover). Collect background/ historical information about the artwork you have chosen and the photographer who made it. We expect that your research will be collected from a variety of sources. For example, art journals, Internet sites, Reference books, Art History and Photography books, your Text books, Videos, Newspaper articles, class work etc.

Before you return the source of information you are using make sure you acknowledge it in the Bibliography section of this booklet.

STEP 2 _ Once you have collected all of the information you need to read it. Re-read through the assignment to identify information that you will need to use for completing Part A, B, C and D.

Highlight the most relevant points of your collected information about the photographer and work and complete Part A.

STEP 3 Look at/ study the image/video. Think about what you see then complete Part B. You will need to revise the Frames in order to complete Part B. You will then need to use that information to write a paragraph describing the devices you can see in the artwork and what effect they have in the artwork.

STEP 4 _ Part C: Answer the given question in essay form by completing your essay plan based on Part A and B.

Proofread your work, make sure it ‘reads logically’.

Before you hand in your essay read it aloud and make sure it flows as a piece of writing.

In class you will then read the essay out to a classmate to ensure you are communicating ideas clearly.

STEP 5 Part D: Using your factual and descriptive response sheets plan a 3-5 minute talk about your artwork. You will need to include your photocopy so everyone can SEE an image of the work you are talking about. The Descriptive Response Sheets (this booklet) must be handed to your teacher immediately after your presentation.
