Q1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the BBC:

  1.     Producing its own programes (as opposed to commissioning others to  make programes for it)

  1. Competing for rating s with other television channels (as opposed to being a public service broadcaster)

  1. Being a global player (as opposed to being a UK provider)

The BBC as public service broadcasting receiving license fee form government plus selling radio receivers. has brought up a set of ideological and often political stereotypes, born in the main from overall demeanors of middle class, institutionalized beliefs and practices. Post 1946, when television broadcasting resumed, the BBC’s popularity was at its height, largely because of its part in the nation's efforts during the Second World War, the BBC. Now, in the 21st century, has to redefine itself to both the public and politicians. They shares many of the current crisis' in broadcasting, as expected issues surrounding funding/revenue and it is also having to reconsider its position in terms of self opinion and audience perception. BBC has developed into one of the world's leading broadcasting and programmer makers.

I will answer this question  by defined the advantages and disadvantages of the BBC on the following issues:

  • Producing its own programmes.
  • Competing for rating with other television channels.
  • Being a global player.

Producing its own programmes

The BBC had been forced by the government to be come more businesslike or towards a commissionig to have the ability to compete with the ITV's in the broadcasting world. The advantages is:

  • High quality programmes producer: The most important advantage for the BBC when it produce it own programmes, it has the reputation as a creator of high-quality, creative programmes which become benchmarks of programme excellence in the world, of course the whole system in the BBC (structure, internal system, management system etc.) working toward the major goal of the cooperation which is design and production of high quality programmes as anther advantage form produce it own programmes. Also there resources will stay in-house, and they can easily control the schedule of their programmes without waiting for other company to do their job in behave of them.

  • Dropping costs: BBC can shrink the huge costs of baying the peogrammes, if they keeping producing there own ones, because the equipments, staff and locations, for the production process which already they own can reduces the cost in case of any production. by using them time after time to produce many of programmes as thy can, which will suit there audiences. For example, ' the match of the day program 'was one of those programmes that attract most of the middle classes in the British society, and that enable them to be the distributor for there programmes in UK and the rest of the world, which main commercially increase the profit.

The disadvantages is:

  • loosing money and competition; the BBC will lose money if they did not ably the new commission system  which will significant efficiency saving within five years, of applying, allowing more money to be spent on programming, which had in addition become cheaper. Also the chance of compete in the broadcasting business will be very low to the BBC if they did not ably the new system.

  • the freedom of choice: BBC will lose the freedom of choice if thy produce there own programme, the producer were given  the freedom to choose purchase serves ,ether from external or internal programme. Producer Choice marked that end of the period of protected creative freedom and radically changed the dynamics between the producers and management, and ended one of the most critical weakness of the BBC, but if the they stop this scheme and return to the old method, than they are going to be out of competition in the broadcasting field.

competing for rating with other ITV

The most of world wide public service broadcasting suffer from losing the majority of there audiences because the increasing of the digital television or the commercial channels, which offer more than 200 channels, BBC also faced a decrease of their audience over the 1990s . They have to try to retain its audience share through a shift toward poplar programming and spending more money on the talent to make them competing directly with commercial channels. BBC which depend on the government fees has to respond to the pressure of making the BBC get its funding from commercial advertising to enter the competition for rating with other ITV. Now, the advantages of BBC to compete for rating is:

  • Surviving in the broadcasting market race: the strategy which BBC took to stay in the rating/public service problem was to inter in the digital revolution, exploiting the opportunities created by new technology and lunching new channels and websites in case to by in the race of ranking in the public service broadcasting. The BBC create many new  new digital channels  with' 4' free-to-air and' 5' commercial channels within public service framework, like BBC2, BBC1,SC4,and BBC Worldwide to compete either nationally or globally. Competition may take some shapes like the sponsorships of football games , worldwide news, Grand National horse race or panorama, to able them to compete with other commercial channels than being a public service  and surviving in the market.
  • Programme variation and talent attraction:  BBC start to increase its programmes quantity and quality,  to suite  there different  kind of audiences in different convenient time watch for them, which will attract more audiences also by hiring talent and ‘stars’ to join the BBC's channels even if they cost to much to be presented in the shows, like Zidan or Renaldo  as football stars , who will attract larger audiences and bring more commercial advertising profits, the "Match of the day"  as sport programme that measured one of the most a popular and successful show in UK which attract most the sport loving audiences all around the world .

The disadvantages is:

  • Dumping down BBC's in an attempt to increase more audiences ,had dropped the high-quality programme as ITV ,with panel games and doctor programmes to just fill the gab of the schedule. BBC were being accused of dumping down and chasing ratings, because the public service broadcasting mean to produce public programme that others don’t, As a result in 2000 BBC governors criticism for the third year running that the company had stopped  producing a good-quality programmes. Like it was in the old days when production suet the English audiences.
