Effect of communications technology on technology

How has the spread of communications technology affected cultures around the world? Critically assess the extent to which Internet is a medium for western culture alone.

In this essay I will discuss how the growth of communications technology has affected the various cultures. In addition, I would elaborate on benefits as well as negative effects of communications technology. As, Communications technology is vast and consists of various other subject areas other than Internet but due to time and space constraints in this essay I would be emphasising on Internet only.

Culture is all around us. It determines our character. When growing up in a certain environment for so long it is difficult to accept and adapt to a change instantly whether the change is related to different language or behaviour or different people or anything else, we feel out of our comfort zone. Internet being one of the most important communications technologies existing today help us to contribute our own news, opinions and beliefs as well as cultural information (KIC,2010, p26) which may consist of anything closely bonded to the culture such as festivals or related to customs and tradition. It may assist people to know more about a specific culture or may bring a great sense of gratification amongst the people belonging to it, as; the domination of English over internet has started to disappear with the change in the assigning body of domain names (ibid).

Technology according to Banta (2009) is "science or knowledge applied to a definite purpose". Internet was initially introduced by the military to exchange information. It was as a technology introduced to us 15 yrs back and changed our life to the extent we never imagined before. Internet has acted as a catalyst to westernisation: "teenagers the world over drinking Coca-Cola, listening to global brand-name bands from the US, Australia and Europe, and mimicking dress styles and behaviours" (ibid) that are actually non-existent in their own cultures.
