Confidentiality The code of conduct will define confidentialities importance to nursing profession and professional code of conduct. It will further look at the possible dilemmas that could arise in interaction between the nurse colleagues and their relatives and how to ensure confidentiality and legislation governing access to confidential information. The Oxford dictionary (1998, p.134) quotes "confidentiality is something that is confidential and is meant to be kept secret." Dimond (2002) defines confidentiality as one of the values of good care practice that is concerned with protecting private information about the patient and clients obtained during the period of professional practice. The NMC code of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives' (NMC, 2008) states firstly one must respect people's right to confidentiality. Professionals must ensure people are informed about how and why information is shared by those who will be providing their care. Everyone must disclose information if you believe that someone is at risk of harm, in line with the law of the country in which you are practicing. (NMC, 2008) As a health care professional, it is important to have legal and professional responsibilities to respect the rights of patients and clients and to treat them equally no matter age or disability. E2 Outline how clients gain access to the service provided. There are many different health care services and many different ways in which the potential service user gains access to those services. Referrals are the main way access is gained to health care. They are usually classified in three ways. * Self-referral: occurs when service users themselves apply for a service. This is done by calling themselves in person, by telephone, by letter or by application form. An example of this is calling your GP to discuss a health problem then making an appointment at the surgery. * Third-party referral: occurs when people apply for a care service on behalf of another person. This could be a family member applying for an elderly relative for specialist treatment. Access to health care services is covered by the patient's charter. This set's out what people can expect from the NHS in terms of standards of service. Primary health care Primary health care is the term used to describe those health services provided in the community that can be accessed directly by the public. Access to any of theses services is by self referral. The patient's charter says that everyone has the right to register with a GP.
