The Representation of Women in Science Fiction referring specifically to Brave New World ,The Passion of New Eve and The Handmaids Tale.

The Representation of Women in Science Fiction referring specifically to Brave New World ,The Passion of New Eve and The Handmaids Tale. The Oxford Concise English dictionary defines science fiction as 'a fanciful fiction based on postulated scientific discoveries or environmental changes.' (1976) Joanna Russ explains: 'Science fiction is not fantasy, for the standards of plausibility of fantasy derive not from science but from the observation of life as it is.' (Russ 1995:4). Science fiction emerged into the world of literature in the 19th century with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) which paved the way for writers such as Jules Verne and H.G Wells. (Drabble and Stringer 2003:574) but became really popular between the 1930's to the 1960's. In today's modern culture, science fiction has become more film orientated with films such as The Matrix. With the development of special effects it has become easier to make science fiction films, so science fiction books are maybe taking a back seat compared to the films. I think in recent years it has been difficult to write about futuristic dystopias that have not already been done before. The world is more certain about its future than it was back when these books were written. Dystopias even in fiction are worrying because they are a portrayal of what could happen. Some dystopian novels are extreme but still we could end up in

Othello, the Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare.

Othello, the Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare Kind of Play - Verse drama - a dramatic/theatrical work (written predominantly in verse but prose features too) - Shakespeare and his contemporaries tried to imitate Greek and Roman drama. This was a period of time when there was a great interest in the classical civilizations of the west, particularly ancient Greece and Rome. During this period termed as the Renaissance, there was a great revival in learning and flowering of the arts and music. - There is an audible distinction between both prose and verse and the audience of Shakespeare's times would have had easily differentiated them. - Verse was generally used by aristocrats, nobles and people of the higher class. Verse was also used for elevated subject matter. - On the other hand prose was generally used by the people of the lower class and for low subject matters. - Othello is a tragedy (see notes for tragedy). A tragic hero in a tragic play is noble by birth and noble by nature, but as the play progresses the tragic hero must proceed from a high point to a low point. The downfall is usually attributed to a tragic flaw in character. Also the principle intention of a tragedy is to evoke a catharsis from the audience. To Note: Shakespeare almost never strictly adhered to the traditional rules/conventions of a tragedy. Of what significance is his rebellion

(TMA 04) In an essay of no more than 1,500 words, discuss 'sensibility' in the poetry you have encountered so far. Was it characteristic of women's poetry alone? ================================================== In this essay I will define the meaning of 'sensibility' in the poetry that I have encountered in this course. Then, I will discuss the gender writing, women's poetry and whether 'sensibility' is a characteristic of women's poetry alone. In poetry, sensibility could be defined as a mental responsiveness and awareness, which refine sensitivity to pleasurable or painful impressions. It also, considered as a cult of feeling, which arose in the eighteenth century in response to philosophical theories. Those theories investigate the power of feeling to communicate directly between people. In the eighteenth century, sensibility celebrated the man feeling, presented with the feelings of sympathy and pity in response to the suffering of others. Sensibility takes us into an internal world of psychology. Curran argues that the link is a crucial one to understanding Romanticism when he writes that the 'poetry of sensibility is at base a literature of psychological exploration, and it is the

GSM Security

Memorandum To: From: Date: 15th March, 2010 Re: Persuasive Essay The essay's target audience is readers of The Guardian newspaper. It is about the issue of G.S.M security and how Karsten Nohl has found a way to listen in on other people's mobile phone calls. I will be agreeing that Nohl's research is important and necessary. Shonak Persuasive Essay So you're on your mobile phone to your bank discussing changing your account details. The next day you find that a fraudulent transaction was made under that same account. What happened? Welcome to what is likely to be an unexpected twist in the practicality of using mobile phones, where the intrusion of mobile phone conversations could become as commonplace as security threats on your computer. And what's worse about it is: there's little you can do to defend yourself. Research conducted by German computer scientist Karsten Nohl suggests giving tools to customers in order to research more into the issues with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, the standard of which most mobiles phone use). Whilst some may deem research of this kind 'illegal', I believe it is imperative that this research is undertaken to better understand the vulnerabilities in GSM. GSM is a standard of mobile communication which was developed and implemented into mobile phone technology in 1988. The information transmitted is

Night and Fog or the Shindler's List

NIGHT AND FOG OR THE SHINDLER'S LIST[ML1] Night and Fog by Alain Resnais and Schindler's List by Steven Speilberg were respectively the first and the last movies that are about the Holocaust. After reading Speilberg's Oskar by Omer Bartov, which states different ways of representing the Holocaust, without any doubt, one is disturbed by his question: Can documentaries be used more effectively and truthfully than fictions? As this paper is written to find an answer to this question, examples of both documentary and fiction representations will be compared by analyzing the sudden reaction of Alain Resnais with Night and Fog, which is rebelling and the Schindler's List of Steven Speilberg, which is the first, probably the last movie possessing "hope" about the Holocaust. .[ML2] As a result of the analyze, the reasons why Night and Fog is a better representation of the Holocaust compared to Schindler's List will be mentioned. Schindler's List, which is the latest movie about the Holocaust, is probably the most spectacular one also, takes a more hopeful, positive side about the Holocaust compared to other representations. The talent of Steven Speilberg combined with the use of technology of the 90s resulted [ML3]in an extraordinary work, not only addressing the Holocaust, but also the human values[ML4]. The movie is about one man, Oskar Schindler, who risked everything to save

Why do liberals support some form of nationalism but oppose others?

Why do liberals support some form of nationalism but oppose others? John Eames 13.5 Nationalism is rather a collection of different ideologies based around the shared belief in the importance of the nation, than a single coherent ideology. Various aspects of nationalism therefore appeal to supporters of different ideologies, and therefore other characteristics come into conflict with that ideology. Liberals thereby support certain doctrines of nationalism on the grounds that they advocate liberal principles, whilst firmly opposing other aspects, as they are seen to be illiberal. As already mentioned, nationalism is an incoherent set of beliefs, sharing only a belief in the importance of the nation. Nationalism can therefore be divided into four distinct sections; conservative nationalism, liberal nationalism, anti-colonial nationalism and expansionist liberalism. Conservative nationalism is one of the earliest forms of the ideology, deriving from the conservative response to the changing of the ancien regime to a new order during the French revolution. Despite being founded in the late eighteenth century, conservative nationalism has always been a prominent force in European politics, with leaders through the ages advocating it and executing its principles. Disraeli and Bismarck are perhaps the best examples of conservative nationalists, promoting this form of

Communication, Laws and regulations - When, if at all, is it appropriate to regulate the internet?

Communication, Laws and regulations: Assessed essay When, if at all, is it appropriate to regulate the internet? Introduction: The internet is the network linking computers on a worldwide scale. This 'net', as it is often called enables each computer user to interact with other computers through the existing telecommunications network (phone lines, satellite connections, cable), without consideration of distances or borders. This system, gave birth to the notion of 'Cyberspace', term created by the writer William Gibson in his book Neuromancer and defined as "a consensual hallucination experienced daily by millions of legitimate operators, in every nation"1. Peoples gain access to the cyberspace through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Another good definition of the internet can as well be found in the words of James Gillies: "The World Wide Web is like an encyclopaedia, a telephone directory, a record collection, a video shop, and Speakers' Corner all rolled into one and accessible through any computer"2. The terms 'internet', 'cyberspace' and 'World Wide Web' are nowadays synonyms but in fact are describing three different things. Internet is the network, the hardware used to link computers together. The cyberspace is the border-free virtual territory created by this network and the WWW is a service accessible on the net. However, in the following essay, these words
