Lloyd George's accounts of the Battle of the Somme - source related study.

Source I and source J are both written by Lloyd George, however they both have very different tones and opinions of what actually happened at the Battle of the Somme. The first, source I, written during the Somme battle, has a very positive tone and suggests the battle is a success. However, source J, also written by Lloyd George has a very different attitude, which unlike source I is negative. Source J which was written many years after the Somme, Lloyd George could have had more access to information which may have changed his mind. The difference in attitude and tone in both sources is obvious as source I states 'turned in our favor' which seems to show it was a success and source J states 'This offensive was already a failure' this shows the opposite tone to source I. So why did Lloyd George write so many different accounts?

During the time source I was written, during the battle Lloyd George had visited the battlefield therefore this may suggest it is more truthful. Though at the time Lloyd George probably only saw a small proportion of what was happening on the battlefield and could not possibly know the full extent of the events on the actual battlefield. On the first day of the battle 57,000 men were killed, so how could he say that it was a success and comment about Haigs "skill" if he had actually seen everything that had happened on the battlefield.
