‘How does Shakespeare make us aware of the gulf between Romeo & Juliet?’

Throughout Romeo and Juliet, the differences, not only between Romeo and Juliet, but throughout all of Verona, are exaggerated within the two families, Capulet and Montague. The two families hatred for each other has forced a crack throughout fair Verona, and it is only kept under control by the Prince.

Within the play, there are characters other than Romeo and Juliet, who are also opposite. Normally, this wouldn’t make us more aware of the gulf between Romeo and Juliet, however, these other characters are either sided on Romeo’s – the Montague side, or Juliet’s – the Capulet’s side. For example, the people who Romeo and Juliet went to see in their worst times towards the end of the play were Friar Laurence, and an Apothecary.

Friar Laurence, who is a well respected, kind hearted cleric who helps Romeo and Juliet throughout the play. He performs their marriage and gives generally good advice, especially in regard to the need for moderation. He is the sole figure of religion in the play; however is also the most scheming man in the play, even if his schemes are well intended. Friar Laurence’s main role in the play is the provider of poison, to which he gave to Juliet. He promised it would, “run a cold and drowsy humour, for no pulse shall keep his native progress, ...
