Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of sexuality using camera, editing, sound and mies-en-scene.

For camerawork, there is an extreme close up in the beginning of the scene with a flashback of Sugar and Kim kissing in a theme park ride, the extreme close up is used to represent something secret, emotional or very personal to Kim.

Also, there is a handful of voyeuristic close up and extreme close up shots in the extract, a good example would be in the pool table scene where the camera zooms into sugar’s breasts from Kim’s perspective, which is interesting because this would be the voyeuristic pleasures from a male perspective but in this scene it is from a female perspective which again represents the idea of sexuality.

For editing, there are contrasts of speed between shots throughout the whole extract. For example, in the opening scene where Kim is in her bedroom masturbating with an electric toothbrush, very fast editing from shot to shot is used to show the confusion that is going through Kim’s head in that moment. However in the scene where her parents are watching the attractive mechanic fix the door it is very slow. This editing technique is used to represent the state of mind of the adults in this extract as calm and laid back, while the teenagers are confused, nervous and insecure. Because calm, laid back and confident people are usually slow in their movements and speech, whereas nervous, confused and unconfident people would usually be fast and jittery with their movements and speech.

For sound, there are many non-dietetic sounds used in the extract that accompany the situation of each scene. For example, cool, slow and laid back music is played when multiple shots of Brighton are shown in the beginning. This is to create a sense to the audience that Brighton is an easy, relaxed, fresh, open and young place to go. It accompanies the extract well because the main characters are young.

Also, there are moments of non-diegetic slow, sexy, groovy and loud club music is used when an attractive characters such as Sugar or the mechanic are introduced. ...
