Where would it go? Would Rebecca leave college? Part of me was worried but the
other part of me was so excited; I had never been round babies or young children as I
was the youngest in my family. I would be an aunty, it was the best secret I had ever
heard and I could not wait until the baby was born.
Nine months passed very quickly and they were full of preparation for arrival
of the baby. I really under-estimated how many things one baby could need! It was
one week after the baby’s due date and my sister was still very uncomfortably
pregnant. It was the 18th June, I came home from school, and my mum told me that
Rebecca had to go into hospital that night because the baby was unusually overdue,
she might even have to have an emergency caesarean! My sister went to hospital but
nothing happened, although we were still on the telephone to her every five minutes!
A whole day passed and still no baby was in sight. At 3pm on the 19th June me
and my mum received a telephone call from the hospital; the midwives had to break
her waters for her so the baby’s birth would become quicker this meant she wouldn’t
have to have a caesarean. We rushed into hospital although we did not know how
much longer it would be until the baby was born. I waited with anticipation in the
guest room while my mum was in the maternity ward with my sister. Ten minutes
later my sister was taken to the labour ward to have her baby. I paced up and down
the room, beads of sweat and excitement ran down my face. How much longer could
it possibly be? I was shaking, I suppose I was scared because I detested hospitals and
I was worried about my sister. At that exact minute thousands of worried thoughts ran
through my mind, it had only been ten minutes but I was so impatient at such a nerve
racking time. Another ten minutes passed and I think I had drunk at least five
cups of water, which is not helpful when you need the toilet! My mum ran into the
room and said that Rebecca had a baby boy and he weighed 8 lb 2oz. My mum and I
had to wait half an hour before we could see the baby because they needed to check
everything was in order.
When I first saw the baby my heart melted; he was my baby nephew! My
sister named him Rhys Dylan. Rhys seemed so small; he had pitch-black hair and
brown eyes that looked like chocolate buttons, just like his mum. He had wrinkled
skin like an old man and his cry sounded like a baby animal wailing for its mother!
When I held him I fell in love with him; he was so cute and adorable! At that moment
I knew that no matter what obstacle came my way I would be the best aunty in the
whole world!
