Comparing Macbeth at the Beginning and End of the Play

I chose this essay title because there is a great contrast between Macbeth at the beginning and the end of the play. Macbeth turns from good to evil but there are some things that are good inside him that do not change.

In the beginning of the play Macbeth is shown as a courageous soldier who is loyal to the king. In the first scene Macbeth is in, he has won a big battle for King Duncan against the Norwegian invaders. This passage is from act 1 scene 2 line 24 “O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!” this tells us that the King is proud of Macbeth and shows Macbeth as a hero. During this scene Macbeth is very violent. He has cut someone ‘from the nave to the chops’ but he was shown by Shakespeare as a hero. Later on during the play he still has the violence in him but he is shown an evil man. Macbeth’s violence stay the same throughout of the play but what Shakespeare portrayed him as has changed. Macbeth has gone from good to evil. Macbeth killed his best friend Banquo and Macduff’s wife and children. At this point he is not heroic anymore. He is shown as a selfish man who wants all the power for himself. What I have also noticed in the play is that when Macbeth was at a low rank, Thane of Glamis, he was a good man but when he was a high rank, Thane of Cawdor, he got more evil and by the time he was king he was an evil man. I think it is quite ironic how the past Thane of Cawdor was a bad man but when Macbeth took over he became a bad man too. When he was the Thane of Glamis he was a hero to everyone but when he was Thane of Cawdor people started to dislike him but the hating got worst when he became the King of Scotland. Macbeth was very overwhelmed by his power and he did not think about anybody else so he was hated by his people.

The relationship between Macbeth and Banquo has also changed dramatically from the beginning to the end of the play. At the beginning of the play Macbeth and Banquo started of being best friends. They fought war side by side. At the end Macbeth ended up killing Banquo because he started not to trust Banquo so Macbeth ordered Banquo’s son, Fleance, to be killed also. At the attack Fleance escaped but Banquo was killed. After the murder Banquo came to haunt Macbeth at the banquet, he kept his promise that he would go to the banquet. ...
