Discuss the theme of the ‘outsider’ with regard to “Silas Marner” & “Stone Cold”.

“I’m invisible see? One of the invisible people” – Stone Cold

“Remnants of a disinherited race” – Silas Marner

The two quotes above taken from two different novels, Silas Marner and Stone Cold written by George Eliot and Robert Swindells. Although the novels were written in different genres and centuries, they both concentrate on the theme of the ‘outsider’. I intend to discuss the theme of the ‘outsider’ I will also examine the similarities yet many differences between the two novels. In each novel the main characters are ‘outsiders’, Link, Shelter and Silas.

The theme of the outsider is not only modern day controversy. The topic has been a major concern among writers for many centuries.

Even the most renowned playwright William Shakespeare used the theme of the outsider in his play the “The Tempest”, where he describes a creature known as the Caliban; which is rejected by all walks of society (written in 1623)

Then over two centuries later the author Mary Shelley, wrote the famous novel “Frankenstein” in that the monster being the outsider.

Modern poets/novelists have realised how important and effective the whole theme of Human Suffering is i.e. the outcast theme; a good example of this is “To kill a mocking bird”. The outcast theme is also still present today; a good example of this is “Edward Scissorhands” this film shows how an outcast became a tragic hero.
