As the plays open, America has been suffering from the consequences of war for two years. The aim of this essay is to explore the different aspects of American life at this time as portrayed by Arthur Miller in his plays a view from the Bridge and All my sons.

In the 1940s the American dream was one that everyone possessed. The American dream promised wealth, happiness and pretty much everything that any citizen could ever want. This concept of the perfect life is one that both men try their very hardest to live by so that they can provide for their families, most importantly their children. When Joe Keller says "what the hell did I work for? That's only for you Chris, the whole shootin' match is for you," this shows very clearly that he feels it is his duty to provide for his son. In a view from the bridge the scenario is very similar with Eddie trying to provide for his niece Catherine who he feels it is his duty to bring up, "Katie I promised your mother on her deathbed. I'm responsible for you".

Family is also very important in the plays as it was to American's at the time. Everything the elders do is for the family around them and the thought of betrayal is something that was found very difficult to deal with. Eddie's strong family values mean that when Catherine becomes engaged to Rodolpho, he feels betrayed as everything he has worked so hard for has been for his niece. Eddie had "struggled for her" and he felt like Rodolpho had "stolen from him". In retaliation Eddie betrays Marco and Rodolpho which in turn betrays Catherine. This is ironic as at the beginning of the play it is Eddie that lectures Catherine about telling no one about her relatives as "You can easier get back a million dollars that was stole than a word you gave away". What started off at the beginning of the play as a strong family unit of Eddie, Beatrice and Catherine disintegrates with each event that occurs. It is Beatrice who says "You want something' else Eddie and you can never have her". She is the only person who is able to voice the suspicions, which various characters in the play have, as she is able to be more honest with him. Honesty is an important factor. Eddie's dying words are ones that show love for his neglected wife Beatrice hoping to somehow repair their relationship. Beatrice even under these terrible circumstances is able to forgive Eddie. Although throughout the play it is obvious that Beatrice is neglected and Eddie's attention is firmly on his niece, she is still able to forgive him. His death also shows that he for the first time needs Beatrice as Catherine has Rodolpho and no longer needs Eddie's approval. This ability to forgive and love through even the worst circumstances is something which family life depended on.

In All my sons the events are somewhat different with some similarities. Joe Keller is so wrapped up in his own family and his love for them that he does not see the universal "family" which he had a duty to. This explains why he did what he did with the faulty parts, to protect his family. When his son finds out his secret his first thoughts were of his family "I thought I had a family here. What happened to my family?" And also "There's nothin' he could do that I wouldn't forgive. Because he's my son...I'm ...
