English - romeo and Juliet coursework - who was to blame ?

Lord Montague

Lady Montague

Romeo

Mercutio

Benvolio

Friar Laurence

At the start of "Romeo & Juliet" Romeo is in love with a girl called Rosaline however at a feast held by Lord Capulet Romeo meets Juliet and the pair instantly fall in love at first sight. This is bad because their families are sworn enemies and are always fighting in public nevertheless they decide they want to get married so Romeo asks his friend Friar Laurence if he will marry them; to get word of the time and date of the marriage Romeo tells Juliet's nurse to inform Juliet of it.

Straight after his secret marriage Romeo encounters Mercutio challenging Tybalt to a duel, after Romeo tries to stop Mercutio fighting Tybalt kills him under Romeos arm, in revenge Romeo slays Tybalt. When news of this reaches Lord & Lady Capulet they tell Juliet that Romeo has killed Tybalt (they still do not know that they are married) but Juliet forgives Romeo. As a punishment for Romeo killing Tybalt he is banished to Mantua, however he is not killed though (perhaps because the Judge can recognise Romeo's motives), he is given one day to leave or else he will be executed. Before he leaves however he spends the night with Juliet (this is the scene I will be studying), meanwhile Lord Capulet has arranged for Juliet to marry County Paris but Juliet refuses, when even the nurse tells Juliet she should marry Paris she decides to go and see Friar Laurence to see if he can help. When she says that she could kill herself if she has to go through with this he asks her if she would be willing to fake her death to be with Romeo, when she agrees he gives her a potion to take that would make her appear dead. Friar Laurence tries to send a message to Romeo to explain the plan but there is an illness in Mantua so the messenger is unable to give the message to Romeo. When Benvolio sees Juliet dead he goes to Mantua to tell Romeo what he has seen, at this point Romeo races back to Verona and buys the strongest poison the apothecary has to offer, goes to Juliet's tomb and kills himself just as Juliet is awakening, when Juliet sees Romeo is really dead she takes his knife and kills herself; this puts an end to their two families fighting.

In this essay I will explore the dramatic devices Shakespeare used in Act 3 Scene 5 of "Romeo and Juliet" more specifically the contrast between romance and violence, the different types of relationships, the language Shakespeare uses and the stagecraft. Act 3 Scene 5 is the scene where Romeo has just been banished and he climbs into Juliet's room where they spend the night together, when Romeo leaves Lady Capulet enters and tells Juliet that she is to marry Paris, when she refuses Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she must tell her father. Lord Capulet appears and asks ...
