Holmes and Watson had a very reliable, dependable, loyal relationship. They both had a personal relationship as friends and a business relationship as colleagues. Together they solved the mysteries bought to them by clients, and to that they stayed devoted. Their devotion to each other was very dear and they showed that devotion in what they did and what they were going to do. In the story of ‘The Speckled Band’ Holmes described Watson as an “intimate friend and associate!”
The intimacy between them enhanced how they went about solving crime. They were very close friends and colleagues, and their relationship grew stronger as they became older friends. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson gained knowledge from each other and from the work they produced. Both characters are remembered today for their mystery solving and trustworthy partnership.
The skills Sherlock Holmes bought into the world of detectives in those days are still most certainly needed nowadays to be a good detective. The many different skills he had consisted of listening, observation, determination, Physical strength, street sense, professional distance and many more. The skills I found most important were determination. One of the main skills Holmes had was determination. He was keen and ready to get on with solving the new mystery bought to him by a new client called Helen Stoner. He was a late riser but when a client was on their way, he was ready to crack on with solving the mystery, standing by Watson’s bedside while he lay sleeping. With this willpower, he solved the mysteries very efficiently and accurately as he had a drive for problem solving. Also his street sense was very sharp. Another one of his brilliant skills was listening. As Helen explained to him what was going on, he relaxed himself to take in every detail of what Helen was telling him. This skill made him create a scene in his head of what the mystery was all about, and helped him work out parts of the mystery in his head.
Sherlock Holmes had a particular technique while solving mysteries bought to him by his clients. He observed every part of his client and relaxed himself so he could take in every detail of the information being given to him. He kept an open mind about everything, which reduced the pressure of solving the mystery. Every time Holmes got new information about the problem or Helen Stoner, he became more and more enthusiastic which made Him even keener to solve it. He was very cautious about who he spoke to. To solve the mystery in the best way Sherlock Holmes could, he examined every possibility there was, very carefully.
The story of the Speckled Band was written from Watson’s point of view. I know this because in the story, he included all the dates and times, and spoke about the mystery very precisely and specifically. Also, he always mentioned what he was doing or thinking at a specific time. At the beginning, as the client came in, Watson, from his point of view thought in the story that “he had no keener pleasure than following Holmes in his professional investigations. Because of this evidence I have found, I know that the story is written from Watson’s point of view.
After concluding the role of Sherlock Holmes as a detective in the story of the Speckled Band, I know that he was one of the most famous detectives in the world, and he bought into the world of detectives different skills and abilities, also, bought his own natural talent and set some very high standards, which detectives these days find it hard to meet.
