Before he kills Duncan he sees a floating dagger this shows he is not in complete control of his senses. While this may mean he is mad and not responsible for his actions. It may mean he is deeply engrossed in the murder of King Duncan and after when he should become King if the witches prophecies are true.
When he finally kills King Duncan he takes a long time over it and you can see his two half fighting, the loyal courageous Warrior against the traitorous merciless side who wants to be king. In the end the evil side wins this means he doesn’t deserve sympathy because in the end he still brutally murdered his King. However it does show he deserves a little sympathy because he was not totally traitorous and against his king.
The way cruelly sets up the guards shows that he is ruthless and clever. He kills them so they can’t defend themselves and say their wine was drugged. He acts like a loyal Lord in valiantly killing the servants, however in truth he is wading in more and more blood showing that he does not deserver any sympathy.
He shows no mercy to his foes or even to his friends. We find out how back stabbing Macbeth really is. When he starts feeling insecure and decides the root of the problem, is the fact that Banquo’s son, according to the witches will still be king after him. So he decides that Banquo and Fleance have to be killed, in order to remain the unchallenged King.
In the feast just after the murders have told him Banquo is dead. Macbeth starts having visions of the dead people he has killed. This might mean he has a diseased mind and is not responsible for his actions and deserves sympathy or, he has is mad but not from guilt or conscience. But from what he has become and what his future holds, and whether the dead will revenge them selves and bring him to his ruin.
He then goes to the witches this could show he is evil or he is under there enthrallment. In this case you could suggest they are killing people not Macbeth. You could say he is going of his own free will, and the blame is all his and he deserves no sympathy with consorting with such evil beings.
After the witch’s prophecies he decides there is another threat to him. So he decides to kill Macduff and all that reside in his castle. You could claim he is acting in self-defense to stop Macduff killing him. However in the end he just ends up killing innocent people for this he deserves no sympathy, if he had a conscience he wouldn’t have slaughtered innocent people these people were of no threat to him.
When Malcolm’s army approaches under the cover of the trees Macbeth is afraid now he deserves sympathy, however he did bring this abut himself so he has no one to blame but himself, so in some ways he deserves sympathy and in some ways he doesn’t.
As the Malcom’s army approaches all of Macbeth’s army leaves him he deserves sympathy now because he realize he has no friends however it was his traitorous ways which made all his, friends, lords and allies scatter to the winds or to his enemies.
I conclude that although fortune was against him that Macbeth does not deserve any sympathy because most of the situations he brought around himself. He could blame it on Lady Macbeth but as the play develops he becomes more and more guilty because Lady Macbeth goes mad because she has a conscience. So at the start it was Lady Macbeth being traitorous and Macbeth being less traitous as the play goes on Macbeth organizes killing on his own meaning he is more guilty.
