Short Story

"Will you get to bed now!" my Mum ordered.

"Coming!" I called back.  It was the same every night - I would stay on the internet and talk in chat rooms almost all night and my Mum would nag me to get to bed.  I felt different tonight though - a mixture of excitement and nervousness.  A couple of months ago I met a sixteen year old boy called James in a chat room.  As soon as we started talking we hit it off straight away.  He lived in a smaller town only a couple of miles down the road from mine, had the same interests as me and was only a couple of years older.  He seemed almost perfect.  So tonight was the night when we decided to meet each other.  We had exchanged pictures over the internet and, although the picture was vague, I knew I could still recognise him.  We had agreed to meet in a small cafe in the centre of town so I thought nothing could go wrong.

"GET TO BED NOW!" My Mum screamed at the top of her voice from the kitchen, making me jump.  I quickly typed 'bye' to my friends and rushed upstairs to my room.  I undressed myself and sank onto my bed.  I decided to skip brushing my teeth and began thinking about tomorrow.  "I can't wait," were my last thoughts before I finally drifted off to sleep.

I awoke with a start as my cat jumped on my bed.  It was 11:30.  I was so grateful I could have a long lie in every day because it was the summer holidays.  I reluctantly got up and chose my favourite clothes: a pair of jeans and my favourite purple top.  I appeared in the kitchen with a big smile on my face.

"What are you so happy about?" asked my Mum.

"Oh, nothing," I replied casually.  I plonked myself down at the table as my Mum brought me some toast and a pot of tea.  I thanked her and began thinking about James.  I could barely hold my excitement in but i restrained myself: I knew my Mum could never find out.  She was the overprotective type who would sooner kill me than let me go and meet James.  "Beep beep" my mobile sounded.  I snatched up my mobile from the table and read the message I had recieved: "Hey how are you?Still up for today? Is 1:00 ok?Are you walking there?".  I quickly sent a message back saying I was walking into town and back and 1 o'clock was fine.  Only one hour till I meet him!

"So what are your plans for today then?" asked my Mum.  "I'm thinking of going into town, want to come?"

"Nah don't think I'll bother if thats ok, though I might head up town to meet some friends," I answered.  It wasn't a complete lie, I thought.

          "What time are you leaving?"

"Just after lunch probably, about quarter to one."

"That's fine, as long as you're not back too late," my Mum warned.  I agreed, ...
