These three stories demonstrate the skill and power of Sherlock Holmes as a detective. These stories have remained popular because of the element of suspense and cleverness of the plots. The way Sherlock Holmes solves crimes is baffling to the reader and the climax of the stories is thrilling as Holmes unravels the crime.

Holmes appearance is shown in the book as being very upper-class and very polite, he is a thin man, very pale with a pointy nose and also very tall, so you would get the impression that he is quite lanky. Holmes is a very intelligent as he can solve crimes quicker than anyone and his attention to detail is incredible.

Holmes shows great observation, patients, and good attitude to others as when he questions Jabez Wilson he listens to everything Jabez has to say and does not but in or draws his question to another subject. Holmes power of deduction have a lot to do with him solving the crimes before anyone as he can study clues and find out what they mean. In the final problem Holmes dresses up as an Italian priest so he can safely board the train without Moriarty seeing him which gives a lot of suspense to the reader about whether Holmes gets on safely. Holmes has a very eccentric personality about him and he loves music, especially the violin, he isn’t very sociable other than Holmes and doesn’t get out much. Holmes has a lot of enthusiasm for solving crimes as he never gives up until a crime is solved. Holmes life revolves around crime as he has a great passion for solving it, he works because it’s his hobby and because he hates the police he also didn’t get paid for it but he always got money out of it from gestures i.e. the bank. Holmes has a sense of morality because he wants wrong doers to be brought to justice, he also respects people and he’s not beyond taking law into his own hands.
