These three stories demonstrate the skill and power of Sherlock Holmes as a detective

  Watson is a character used in the books to narrate the story in first person he is also a great friend of Sherlock Holmes and has a great interest in crimes as it says ‘ your cases have indeed been of greatest interest to me’ so it does show that he enjoys solving crimes and working with Holmes. Watson takes notes for Holmes as he is busy thinking, you could say that he was Holmes sidekick. Watson is a great asset to Holmes and I there when he is needed, he even goes with Holmes to dangerous situations and he is usually armed for safety.

 The villains in the Sherlock Holmes are the building blocks to the stories, as there always must be a villain to catch and to see who was behind it. A good villain must always be shy and clever quick, precise and always cover there tracks. Sherlock Holmes is always one step ahead in solving crimes and no villain can ever match Holmes knowledge and detection.

 Dr Grimsby Roylott has an evil passion, with a smile that resembles to a fierce old bird of prey; he was a clever and ruthless man very similar to moriarty. Roylott had a passion for exotic animals as he had a cheetah, baboon and also the snake.

Moriarty had a great education and was professor of mathematics, he was also an army coach so you could say that he was great all rounder. He is very much like Sherlock Holmes but bad as he was very tall and thin like Holmes, and he also had a pointy nose.

John clay was the top criminal of London, he was very clever and very polite and he was also later found to be royalty, I think he played a great part in making RHL interesting as it was very covered up about Clay being the culprit as he was a very innocent and polite man so it was difficult to spot him as a villain.

Holmes did not like the police because he didn’t like the way they worked and thought that they were useless and couldn’t get a job done right, Homes worked as a detective as a great hobby to him but I also think that he wanted to solve crimes before the police did to show them that they were incapable of doing the job.

The stories of Sherlock Holmes are very original, well thought out and the way that the mystery unfolds at the end is very clever. What makes the stories interesting is probably the involvement you get from them because even you can try and solve the crime as you read the book and as the mystery unfolds, you get to see if you were right. Red herrings may appear in the book to put you off track, or to change your mind about who did the crime which is very clever of Doyle because it puts more suspense and action into the book. The variety of cases Doyle uses is good because it would get a bit tedious if they were all murders.

 The settings in the book are very different from each other i.e. Baker street London to the Reichenbach falls in Switzerland, this setting change makes the books more different from each other, also adds more atmosphere and mood to the stories.

The description of the stories is great and you can really see an image of the places and people in your head which gives a lot of realism to the plot, also the level of detail in the stories about a place or person is a real incite of the personality of the person and also the look of the person.
