        "In this long evolution of racial attitudes in America, nothing was of greater importance than the enslavement of Africans." This is not a valid statement. The enslavement of Africans is definitely important in the evolution of racial attitudes in America. The basis of American racial attitudes and that of slavery come from the belief of the first American colonists that black Africans were an inferior race. Most believed they were not even human. These beliefs are the main cause of the treatment of Africans from colonial times up through the treatment of African Americans today.

        Europeans had encountered Africans long before they began trading them as slaves. They did not understand the African way of life; their religious beliefs, their traditions, or their customs. People want to hate or fear what they do not understand and the Europeans did exactly that. They believed that Africans were inferior, not even human, because they had different colored skin and lifestyles. Since these people were "heathens" it was acceptable to enslave them. Even the Catholic and Protestant churches supported this idea for a time, although they eventually dropped their pro-slavery policies.

        The European Americans did not just see slaves as workers on their farms. They were property, like livestock or an article of clothing. They were unacceptable as members of the ruling society, as sexual partners, as friends, or family. An example is legislation from Virginia in the mid 1600's that included A man being whipped for sleeping with a black woman, Owners of slaves being allowed to punish their slaves however they saw fit. Blacks were not allowed to own any kind of weapon and slaves were not able to leave their owner's property without written permission. These types ...
