Compare 2 tropical storms one from a LEDC and one from a MEDC. Explain?

  • How the effects are different between MEDC`s and LEDC`s.
  • How the differences in state development of the two countries influence the storms impact?

The two tropical storms I am going to choose are Cyclone One Bravo which hit the south east coast of Bangladesh. This is the LEDC tropical storm. The other tropical storm is the MEDC one which is Hurricane Floyd which hit the east coast of America.

Cyclone One Bravo had originated in the Bay of Bengal. 111 people died and 7000 thousand were injured and 500,000 were made homeless. The effects were made worse by the spread of diseases like diarrhoea as water was contaminated with sewage and dead bodies. Links between Maheskhali Island and the mainland were severely disrupted making it difficult to get reports of damage & casualties. Wells were contaminated with seawater.

Economically 608 schools were damaged; fisherman lost their incomes, electricity supplies failed, the years harvest was destroyed and it was difficult for Bangladesh to develop and get out of debt as the government has to provide relief + rehabilitation to its people.

Environmentally fish ponds were contaminated with sea water so it killed the fish because they were used to a fresh water ecosystem. Embankments were damaged leading to an increase risk of flooding next year or in the near future. There was also soil erosion in the foothills of the Himalayas which many lead to a landslide.
