Prayer is a form of communication between God and people

Extracts from this document...

BY AARUSHI MEHTA 10.3 Prayer is a form of communication between God and people. Christians use prayers in both public and private worship as away of communicating with God. They also use prayers to listen to God and receive guidance, support and comfort from him. The prayers may be said in silence or aloud. Jesus taught that people must be persistent in prayer. They should not expect their prayers to be answered straight away. Jesus taught that Christians must pray with true faith and devotion. Prayer was the way through which Jesus could talk to his father, God. Jesus believed that God had a purpose for his creation. He used prayers as the means by which he could discover this purpose. It is said that when Jesus needed support, used prayers so that God's wisdom, power and strength could come to him. There are four main types of prayers in Christianity; Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. I will be focusing on three of these 4 prayers in this piece of coursework. When Christians want to thank God for something, they say a thanksgiving prayer. This kind of prayer helps Christians feel grateful and stops them from taking things for granted. People can thank God for various things. For example: getting better/ recovering from an illness; giving them life; some good news they've received etc. I interviewed a Christian on thanksgiving and this is what she said: "Every time I go to church, I thank God for my loving husband and my two beautiful children who he's blessed me with. I'm thankful for all that he's given me- a place where I earn my living, a place that I can call home and so much more. Every time, I have a problem, I pray to him. I ask him for help and guidance." Looking at this interview, I can see that this person is very satisfied with her life and she thanks God for it. There are many people like her who might thank God for various things. Jesus said that it is important to understand the essence of life and be thankful for it. ...read more.

We all have to realise that we are dependant on each other at some point or the other. We're not always able to survive on our own and therefore need help at times. Christians are not forced to pray but they have to understand that praying helps them to get away from the everyday activities and seek serenity and guidance. It helps them to compose their insides and forget their problems for a little while. Belief is a trust that demonstrates faith in one's God. When a Christian prays, it shows that they have a belief in God. They say that you should only pray to God if you truly believe in him and his existence. Therefore, prayer expresses trust/faith. If a Christians' prayers are answered, their belief in God strengthens and they are likely to pray more. For example: If a Christian prays to be healed from a life-threatening disease and they are cured, they are encouraged to have more faith in God. Christians believe that the more they believe, the more God is able to answer prayers therefore the more they pray, the more likely it is that their prayers are answered. ...read more.
