Oil Spill Essay

Emily Schmitz, T-Th 6th Hr.

        Anytime there is an oil spill somewhere in the world, it is a tragedy for the place where it occurred.  The purpose of this essay is to inform people about the past, present, and future impacts of two horrible oil spills.  I will be contrasting the Deepwater Horizon and the Exxon Valdez oil spills, but I will be doing a little bit of comparing as well.

One major oil spill that had many past, present, and future effects was the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  It started after an explosion on a drilling platform.  One of the past effects was all of the immediate deaths that occurred.  The 5 million gallons of oil spilled killed many animals, eleven people, and ruined several beaches that will take years to clean up.  There are many present impacts too.  People are still trying to recover from all of the damage, and clumps of oil are continuing to be found.  Also, BP was asked to change but didn’t to save costs.  We even have a few future concerns too.  Oil is expected to remain for years to come because our solution wasn’t an 100% fix.  BP is banned from drilling new wells for seven years.  This oil spill really harmed the Gulf of Mexico’s beaches and waters.

Another terrible oil spill that happened was the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989.  One immediate effect was the 11 million gallons of oil that spilled from a very large ship.  We weren’t at all prepared for this and locals were the first responders.  This led to lots of animals dying and thirty-one species were affected.  There are also some impacts from the Exxon Valdez oil spill right now.  Since nobody was prepared for this oil spill, it made us more prepared for the Deepwater Horizon.  Even though this oil spill happened all the way back in 1989, there are ...
