Oedipus Rex


The entire action of the play is set in the city of Thebes, which is in the grip of a deadly plague at the start of the play. The reason for the plague is that Laius’ murderer has not been punished. Laius was the ruler of Thebes before the present King (Oedipus) and was supposedly killed during a journey by a group of robbers.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF THE PLAY (MYTH)

Zeus was the god of Greek people. He was a beautiful and very strong. His fun was having sex with beautiful girls. He used to move around and whenever he find some beautiful girl he took her with him and have sex with her. His practice continues until he meats Europe sister of Kadmus. He takes her with him. Kadmus sends his son to get back Europe.

He is in search of Zeus when he confronts a dragon. He kills this dragon and Athena a goddess tells him to get the teath of dragon and sow them into soil. On doing so these teath grow p quickly into men, Who are very strong. These men are known as Sparti (sown men). Zeus in search of beautiful girls meets a spartian girl Antiope who willingly goes with her. They had sex and give birth to two sons Amphion and Zeathus. Zeathus marries a girl Thebe.

When King Laius loses his kindom to Zeathus and Amphion the sons of Zeus and Antiope, he takes refuge with Pelops but Laius repays Pelops’ kindness in a rather cruel way by kidnapping his son Chrysisppus. This cruelty brings upon him and his a family a curse for the two generations. After the death of  Zeathus  and his brother Amphion  Laius resumes his kingship. He marries Jacosta sister of Creon. However, Apollo warns Laius that his son will kill him one day as punishment for his abduction of Pelops’ son.

In an attempt to avoid the fulfillment of the prophecy, Oedipus’ parents, Laius and Jocasta, give Oedipus to a shephered to take him to  Mount Cithaeron and leave him there. A spike is driven through the child’s feet to prevent him from crawling or moving away. However, a shepherd finds the infant and brings him to Polybus and Merope, King and Queen of Cornish. Being childless, they adopt this child as their own son and name him Oedipus, which in Greek means “swollen foot”, due to the deformity in his feet.
