ACADEMIC psychologists can be found in teaching posts in universities and polytechnic colleges.They are also involved in research, dealing in ways in
which knowledge is attained, retained and used. This includes area’s such as, memory, perception, problem solving and reasoning . This is usually pure (applied) research , carried out in the name of science, the work of people like Pavlov and Skinner are good examples of work in this field. Academic psychologists are also used by business organisations to carry out research on their behalf.
EDUCATIONAL psychologists are usually employed in nurseries, schools and colleges and generally work with the five to sixteen year old age groups. Their main area’s of work include the administering of tests such as IQ tests as part of the assessment of learning difficulties. They are involved in the planning and supervision of remedial teaching,planning and implementation of educational programmes for physically handicapped, mentally handicapped and other children with learning difficulties. Furthermore they are involved in
researching teaching methods , interviewing and counselling methods and techniques, as well as advising teachers and parents on how to deal with children with physical or mental handicaps, behavioural problems and learning difficulties.
INDUSTRIAL or occupational psychology as the name suggests deals with the psychology of the workplace .The industrial psychologist can help businesses in many different area’s including the selection and training of individuals for jobs,aptitude tests for example can help find out if the candidate or employee has the right qualities for the job to be done.Another important aspect of the industrial psychologists work is Ergonomics (fitting the job to the person), whereby applications from experimental psychology are made to the design of machinery and equipment, computer keyboards for example which can help alieviate fatigue in the workplace. Another facet of ergonomics is advising on working conditions such as temperature or the brightness of lighting in the workplace to help maximise productivity. Many advertising and marketing companies use industrial psychologists to help them identify and target the specific market that their product or service is to be aimed at .
