The area of study I have chosen to develop and evaluate my subject knowledge on is History: KS2: 12: A European History Study of Ancient Greece. I have chosen to focus this further by specifically looking at the games and leisure of the ancient Greeks and their Olympic games. The learning outcome states; ‘To develop and evaluate appropriate key stage subject knowledge in a specific area of study within the national curriculum.’ I have chosen this area because I am aware that it is taught in primary schools and I have a limited amount of subject knowledge on this particular topic. Hopefully by researching further into this specific area I will be able to feel comfortable teaching this in a primary school classroom. I believe that subject knowledge is not just about having a secure content knowledge base on the subject but also being able gaining pedagogical knowledge.

One of the books in which I read to help build upon my subject knowledge Is Ackroyd P. (2005), ‘Ancient Greece’. Although it did not supply me with enough information to allow my subject knowledge to increase efficiently it did give me an insight of this subject area in more detail. Some of the basic information I have gained is that the Olympic Games were part of a festival dedicated to the God Zeus. It also supplied me with the information that the ancient Greek Olympic Games started in 776 BCE and ended in 393 CE. Ackryod P. (2005), P33. ‘The Olympics Games were held every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia, in western Greece.’ And the event also lasted for five days.  The book did not give me great detail of any events in which took place or any rules or restrictions that were applied. It also did not give me much of an insight to what happened on each day of the five days which the event took place. This book also told me that women were not allowed to take part in the Olympic Games or unable to watch the events that took place. Although it gave me this information it did not give the reasons why this was and what would happen if they were caught at the event. I have not been able to expand on some of the knowledge it has given me therefore only know a limited amount of information about the topic area so far. The information I gained from reading this book will help me to maintain other information that I will gain from the other resources. It has given me the basic knowledge about the topic area to build upon.

After only achieving a limited subject knowledge base from the first resource I then wanted to build upon this further by being able to expand on some of the knowledge I have learnt so far. I then chose my second resource to aid me in doing this.  is a website which has been created for teachers to gain subject knowledge on this topic when taking their class to the museum. This was a useful source and helped me understand some of the sporting events that took place. I learned that any ‘Hostilities were banned during the period around the ...
