What arguments could you use to claim that Distance Education is the only way to provide for the world’s growing population?

Education is generally defined as the process of learning general knowledge and key skills, such as the ability to reason and discuss.Distance Learning is an educational program in which the chief mode of communication between instructor and student is not face-to-face. This system does not require the student to be physically present in the same location as the instructor. Historically, Distance Education meant correspondence study. Today, audio, video, and computer technologies are more common delivery modes. Advancement in technology has increased to great extent today.  We who have had the opportunity to receive an above basic level of education can definitely say that there are advantages that must be experienced by all as a basic human right. There is a basic skill of being able to read and write that comes with a basic level of education. Education helps to empower people and even assist in the global struggle and fight against child labour.

Firstly, one can not attempt to address distance education whilst ignoring basic education. As by providing distance education one is able to meet the basic educational needs of individuals no matter what the age grouping.

According to Perraton (2000) in an earlier study, ‘Basic education refers to education that is addressed to both adults and children. It includes primary education programmes and programmes equivalent to primary and, in many countries, junior secondary education.  It also includes those programmes with alternative curricula, including such areas as basic health, nutrition, family planning, literacy, agriculture and other life-related and vocational skills’.

Distant education is an educational process for which majority of the time the learning occurs when the teacher are removed in space and or time from each other.

Why the need for Distance Education?

Not so recently, a little over 50 years ago to be more precise, through the committed response to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The world was awakened to the global challenge for basic education for all and through the growing awareness have since recognized and taken responsibility for the same. It all stems from the gathering of international organizations and non-governmental organizations at a world conference held in Jomtiem, Thailand in 1990. The aim of the meeting was to discuss and endorse plans to achieve basic education for all and to eradicate illiteracy worldwide by 2000. This was possibly seen as too much of an ambitious plan as ten years later this was still not achieved. Despite enrolling an additional 50 million children in primary schools, today it is estimated that more than 130 million children still do not have access to primary education (DFID 1999: 11). There were obvious hindrances. Thus the need for another meeting held in Dakar of April 2000 agreed on setting a target of six Education for All (EFA) goal with a new target date set for 2015.  I strongly recommend that this will only be achievable through distance learning programmes. Distance Learning can be provided under two main headings:

1. In-school programmes which is aimed mainly at children and caters for the     delivery of curriculum in a conventional school setting.

2. Out-of-School programmes are designed mainly for adults and school drop outs. The provision of basic education is made through different models of distance and open learning.

My argument is that Distance Education is the only way to provide for the world’s growing population and is supported by the following points.

The Flexibility to  study at a pace and place of your own choosing for example the out of school programmes for adults which include the radio phonic and television schools common in Latin America. I strongly believe that distant learning can be used to motivate interest in learners to learn on their own terms. Rather than change their lifestyles to suit existing structures in education.

Well-designed programmes focused on practical relevance as in the case of the Gobi Women’s Project in Nigeria where distance learning is used to support indigenous and locally controlled development. It provides an opportunity to help maintain cultural diversity and thereby improve equity. (Yates and Bradley : 2000)
Manageable weekly installments and self-aid progress questions. Reduced expenditure which often sees no travel fees for some learners in the lesser developed countries. There are Self-managed study no marked tests or assignments for submission.  Many countries have struggled to meet the cost of distance learning and overtime have come to rely chiefly on Reference ...
