Năm Nh in “Ci ơi” by Nguyn Ngc Tư: A critical approach to the characteristics of the southern people in Vietnam

In the story, Năm Nhỏ was portrayed as a miserable old man. A twelve-year journey to look for his daughter is really a long and hard one. In our opinion, his daughter’s leave has destroyed his life. Everyone doubts him, blames him for killing his stepdaughter; the words his neighbourhood uses are so terrible: “Bà con hàng xóm xầm xì, chỉ trỏ, người ở xa còn thuê đò dọc lại nhà ngó nghiêng, đâu, thằng cha giết con đâu? Đâu? Con nhỏ bị chôn chỗ nào?” More severely, being affected by such surrounding rumours, his wife also suspects him: “vợ ông khóc lên khóc xuống, bảo chắc là, ông để bụng chuyện nó là con của chồng trước nên ngược đãi, hà khắc đuổi xua”. At that time, her love for him is replaced by the suspicion and doubt. From the ancient times to the present, actually, Vietnamese people’s conception of the relationship between stepmothers or stepfathers and his or her stepchildren is not often good at all. Năm Nhỏ’s heart seems to be broken by such unconfirmed rumours and traditional conception. In this situation, he has to leave his village and determine to bring his daughter back. He goes to many places to look for his stepdaughter Cải to prove to everybody that he does not kill his daughter. It is so suffering for the father who loves his daughter very much when he is doubted to kill her. Although Cải is just his stepdaughter, he still loves her and has a close relationship with her: “Ông đã dắt con nhỏ đi hái xoài chín trong vườn hoang, đã chặt chuối làm bẹ cho nó lội, thả trâu, chơi diều, ông đã cõng con nhỏ đi tắt mấy vạt đồng để khám bệnh chỗ ông bác sĩ già mỗi khi nó nhức đầu, sổ mũi. Cây kẹp nhỏ, mớ dây thun khoanh, mấy cục kẹo dừa vung vinh trong túi áo mỗi khi ông đi chợ về.” That is the southern people who are so candour and sincere. The sorrow of losing daughter and “having home but he cannot come back” make him older and more faded. In such a chain of long days he lives sadly but hopefully, his only desire is that one day he will meet Cải.

On the way to find his daughter, Năm Nhỏ meets and makes friends with Thàn. Even though they are not relatives, they help each other to survive and work in the same ensemble. When their ensemble collapses, Thàn takes Năm Nhỏ to Sương Confluence in order that both of them live together in a house as small as a box of matches. Day in day out, they went to sell barley-sugar (kẹo kéo) to find his daughter. The purpose of taking part in the ensemble and selling barley-sugar is to look for Cải. In fact, when Năm Nhỏ still works in the ensemble, before the performance, he always speaks into the microphone: “Cải ơi, bà là Năm Nhỏ nè con…” With a bicycle to sell barley-sugar, he does not forget his main purpose: ‘xe kẹo kéo của ông nổi tiếng nhờ giọng ca nhừa nhựa của thằng Thàn, nhờ giữa hai bài hát có mục “nhắn tìm con” buồn ác chiến’. During that time, the relationship between Thàn and Năm Nhỏ is closer; they seems to be father and son. While Thàn’s “real” relatives does not accept Diễm Thương, Năm Nhỏ shows his sympathy with the love of Thàn and Diễm Thương, and strongly supports their wedding.

Her parents left her alone when Diễm Thương was a little child. As for us, she is the most complicated character in this story. At the outside, she seems to be an emotionless and naughty girl. In fact, although she knows that Năm Nhỏ has been finding his daughter for such a long time, and really expects look for his daughter in the near future, she has an intention of playing a trick on him: she pretends to be Cải. Right at that time, Năm Nhỏ feels very happy; he thinks that his long and difficult journey can end now. He wants to share his happiness to everyone, especially to Thàn “Tía kiếm có con Cải rồi, dễ ợt hà mầy ơi”. However, his happiness soon becomes his disappointment when he realises that it is just Diễm Thương’s trick. In spite of being tricked, Năm Nhỏ is not angry with her. He just blames himself for not remembering his daughter’s face. Moreover, Năm Nhỏ is willingly to be Diễm Thương’s father – the representative of her family when Thàn mentions their wedding. In contrast, Diễm Thương is still rather cold and shows her joy when collecting a sum of wining bet money. However, her soul is an innermost with sadness and mysteries. Diễm Thương must accept to be a waitress in a hugging-beer bar – a job which is despaired and criticized; but she always hopes that her parents will come back with her in some day. In the bottom of her heart, Diễm Thương really desires for a happy family. In a police raid, she is arrested and shown on a television report. While other people hide their faces with hands, she calmly stand and looks at the camera, which does not mean she does not feel ashamed at all, just because she wants her parents will recognise her when she is in the TV, “cái nhìn đó như dấu hỏi nao lòng, tôi đây nè mà ba má ở đâu có nhận ra tôi không? Có nghe đau lòng?”

Under a keen and precise pen, Cải ơi! by Nguyễn Ngọc Tư is a picture of the true life. The character Diễm Thương in the story breaks our heart. Her intention of pretending Cải blames for not only her irresponsible parents but also her unhappy fate. Life condition leads a person to a wrong and bad choice; and Diễm Thương is in this situation. We really sympathise with her. Although she is a street girl and criminal, Diễm Thương, in our opinion, is a good girl. Her emotionlessness is a good shelter for facing up to the ruthless reality.
