The action genre is amazing. Its fantastic characteristics provide suspense at a most spectacular impact that will make you leap out of your seat. Simply it should evoke numerous emotions, capturing the essence of the cinema audience’s expectations, as a result capturing the audience’s attention, leaving them fixed to the screen from the marvellous action sequences.

The action sequences are the focal point of the film; this aspect of the genre leaves the audiences fixed to the screen. To elaborate; this genre has been designed for pure audience escapism. This is projected from every aspect of the film; the intense energy lets the audiences escape from reality to a world of violence, explosion, and enrapturing heroes. The specifications for a successful action film have changed from the historical exploding car or collapsing building. The 21st century audience’s expectations are now more imaginative and they expect bigger and better. The purpose of action films is to amaze every person in the diverse modern audience, creating a total cinematic experience. Finally action films will grasp the heart and soul of the audience. All of these marvellous features are compressed into a small snippet of the film, known as a trailer.

The name of the film gives the audience insight into the film like 2 FAST AND 2 FURIOUS; as it is stated in the title, the film is not just average fast but it is too fast, this creates an exciting tone. This exciting tone is projected throughout the film through action techniques. In addition, the audience will start to wonder, what is too fast? Furthermore, it is stated as being too furious. Furious is a form of anger, anger leads to chaos, and chaos leads to violence and action, subsequently giving the audience that which they desire. Action is the genre I have chosen and I am analysing it in the following trailers.

Clear and Present Danger is my first action trailer, it is the epic tale of heroism against a corrupt government. The American people are advocates of the fear of conspiracies and corruption, from their fear of corruption in the White House and the government. Corruption is the main plot of the film. An audience would be interested in corruption and the affairs of the White House, so they would be interested in the film.

The trailer begins with a patriotic full screen picture of the American flag. The flag symbolises freedom, freedom that the corrupt government is trying to take away. This may evoke patriotism or if it were not an American audience, it would evoke intrigue because people are interested in the world’s biggest superpower. There is no music at this point; this is done so nothing is detracted from the powerful and symbolic American flag. Later dramatic music creates an atmosphere of tension. This restrained beginning would build suspense in an audience.

The hero Jack Ryan, played by superstar actor Harrison Ford speaks the first piece of dialogue with an aura of invisibility. Ford would appeal to his followers from his previous films, such as Star Wars a highly sensational box office hit and Indiana Jones also a hit. Women might find him attractive and a mature heartthrob. This would give them the desire to watch the film. The atmosphere throughout the trailer rises, this is executed with precision and skill; the use of dramatic music engrosses the audience. The contrast in pace is apparent as the tension rises. The tone changes from a dramatic uneasy one into the distinctive hard edge action tone.  At this point the audience succumbs to a feeling that everything is not right in the film.

The actors dialogue becomes stronger; their vocal extremes are more prominent in every scene up to the climax. This would show to an audience that he is both very arrogant and rude, or the President is not to be trusted and does not deserve your respect. This conflict between the two characters is brilliant, it creates tension and action; also it is compelling to watch. Jack Ryan only respects one thing, the truth. This admirable characteristic gives him his heroic attributes, he is not a Braveheart or a Conan but he is a hero of his own era; the era ...
